If I could be excused for interrupting the HOB's discussion of soccer matches and dead ex Raiders who never played at UK, I just started my intense review of Phil Steele's magazine. Lots more commentary to come (I'm sure you are waiting with bated breath)
However, I was surprised (or had forgotten) to see that Towles only threw 14 touchdown passes last year in nearly 400 attempts. In an air raid offense, that honestly is not too good. (Just as one comparison, Georgia Tech's quarterback completed 18 touchdown passes and they almost never throw the ball)
In fact, our offense only averaged just over 300 yards per game the last six games. In this era, that is not winning football. Not all QB's fault, obviously, losing Montgomery and Badet for the year, and Timmons being hurt, did not help the receiver corps and our offensive line was not the best, without question. Frankly, I like many never could figure out what Neal Brown was trying to do, seemed like he emphasized a different player and scheme about every other week.
That being said, does anyone know how Barker is progressing in physical training and skeleton sessions this off season? Like Woodson, Towles could really take a big step forward this season, and I am confident our quarterback situation will be better, whether he or Barker plays. (I like the hire of Shannon Dawson a lot) But looking at last season stats, I am not as sold on Towles keeping the job as I was before I started looking at Phil Steele.
