Poythress will be a beast when Sec play starts.

Great kid!....but nothing would make me happier then if he could dribble more then twice without traveling

It would be a major miracle if he can play more than 4 minutes of meaningful minutes in a game without disappearing.

We have been waiting for Alex to be that guy for about four years but we only get it in spurts.

You can't just go to the store and but a 6 pack of beast

No Poke you cant. You also cant walk into aforementioned establishment and buy yourself 6'8 240 worth of pure muscle that can jump out o' the gym either.
That's God given.

Want him to start creating his own shots too. If he starts doing that, sky is the limit.

I may be ready to give up on Alex ever reaching beast status. I was really excited about seeing Alex starting at the 4 spot this year, but he still disappears a lot. Some of it is probably the knee not being 100% but the time is now. He has the talent and experience to be the best player on this team but I don't think he's built that way mentally.

I don't know if we will ever see BEAST MODE ALEX, we've been hoping for that for 4 years. I'd settle for a sustained good human mode right now snd be happy with that. We don't need him to rip the rim down then go kiss babies, we just need him to get the rebounds he can get and give us 10 points on put backs and free throws. Maybe the occasional 16 point performance but he has the tools to make his presence known whenever he's on the floor but too many times you don't even realize he's out there.

Those are Alex's last five games. Fairly consistent, with averages of 10/7.8

Looks like he's doing exactly what you want him to do. If you don't notice him, maybe he's not the problem.

Poythress is off to a great start. He should be returning to 100% pretty soon seeing how it's been almost a year since his ACL injury and they normally take a year to fully recover from. It wouldn't surprise me if he starts in the near future.

Yup, those are nice numbers and I'm good with that but you missed the point because you're hung up on his stats. He doesn't need to score points, block shots or snatch rebounds to affect the game, but there are times he doesn't do the little things. Why do you think Cal still Yanks him out 2 or 3 times per game? Because he missed assignments or showed a lack of effort. That's what I'm talking about.
But again, we don't need some fantasy land "beast mode" that just isn't going to happen. This team needs a consistent Alex Poythress for ALL aspects of the game.

I think Cal pulls him because he's tired and asks out.

Good post. Those numbers and strong defense, and staying out of foul trouble, is exactly what we need from Alex. Nothing more.

I'm actually a bit surprised that he's played as well as he has this early.

Like some that get it have said, we need him to be a defender, rebounder, energy man, and do most of his scoring off of lob dunks and put-back baskets. Same applies for Lee. To quote Cal, their role is to play like the elite athletes that we know they are.

Alex is going to give us just what he has . Solid minutes but he isnt going to score 14-15 a game . You cant get that many dunks/ put backs a game to average that high a number . Just needs to THE MAN on the boards , thats what we need and I'll be happy if he just keeps us from getting killed on the boards .

It would be a major miracle if he can play more than 4 minutes of meaningful minutes in a game without disappearing.

Throw out the first game (Albany) where he played only 11 minutes, and he's averaging 10 points and 7.8 rebounds in 23 minutes of play. He's still getting his confidence and his stamina back. I see reason for optimism.

I think his age and experience will help us more than people think when we get into tough game situations, especially on the road. Not necessarily scoring, but getting tough boards and snuffing out the other teams offensive threat at the 3 or 4. Championship teams usually have this ingredient.
