Playing to Win vs. Not to Lose

Probably true. It seems like tonight Dawson was willing to adjust and try new things when something wasn't working...moved the pocket, went to Jojo and kept feeding him, kept an extra blocker in to give Pat more time, etc.

We played not to lose in the first 3 games. we got lucky to hang on at USCjr. not so lucky against UF. when we got the ball back after going up 14-10 and ran 3 straight times (after patrick had such a good drive throwing the ball right before that) i thought "here we go again"... then we got the ball back and went back to the air and put one in the end zone...

that TD drive and throw to Dorian Baker may be a turning point in our season in terms of playcalling mentality. we were rewarded for playing to win vs playing to not lose. we have more talent than mizzou and playing not to lose puts our talent at a disadvantage...

I think that Stoops coaches a little conservative, but with a good defense you can get by with it sometimes.....

There were a couple of times that I thought that we were too conservative.. One was when we made a run back to the 50 yard line after they scored and kicked off to us... We should have put the pressure on them down field with the pass, but we used running plays and kept going backwards...

We had the ball to begin the second half and we went conservative again.. When we scored and went ahead of them, Stoops began playing field position.... This was a night that we were clicking of offense......

You guys just want to complain. The only way Stoops can be successful in that scenario in your eyes is if he scores a TD. Playing to win and playing Not too lose is the most overblown statement "Non"-Coaches make.

Crazy things happen in the game of football. The ball is NOT round and the direction it rolls is not predictable. When you're backed up in your own end of the field the ONE thing you don't want to do is make a mistake and give them any momentum.

Sometimes you have to be smart.

While I agree you have to play smart at times, the teams we typically fall behind to in critical moments aren't playing "smart". They're playing (foot)balls to the walls, and taking the risk necessary to seal the deal. We typically don't lose to "smart" teams.

Nobody is really talking about it, but I was pissed when we all but kneeled on it with 1 min before the half.
Would like to have seen a shot downfield but very understandable after starting so deep on our side and getting the ball to start the second half.

When we punted on 4th and 1 I thought we might live to regret not going for it.....Worked out this time for a change

Our three wins were games that, in the past, our team might have or likely would have choked. For the nearly 50 years I've been watching them, they have found ways to lose...as Bill Curry said " Grab defeat from the jaws of victory" more times than I can remember. The absolute biggest change I've seen in this year's team is they don't seem to have that "oh boy, we're going to find a way to lose" attitude.

As I sat in the stands last night, I admit to thinking we were going to find a way to give it away. It will take a while to break that thinking and have confidence in the team. However, it appears our kids are gaining that confidence. Maybe there is a chance they can break the curse.

The player's mind is the most underrated part of the game. If they think they will lose, they probably will. I'm glad CMS appears to have the players developing a we can win attitude.

think of how you might have felt had pat dropped back to pass and Mizz sacked him, used their timeouts & kicked for a three point lead. We also had to run plays to keep the clock running. This may have seemed like a nothing time in the game, but it took great coaching to keep this situation in check. Real bad things could have happened!!!

There is the crux of the problem. Your 2 minute offense should be well schooled on what NOT to do. You don't take a sack in that situation, you don't throw the ball into coverage, you take what's clearly open and get it there safely.

When we got out to open field, I thought it was a perfect time to show what our 2 minute offense could do. I guess we aren't there yet with the coach's confidence.

I loved the play calling and aggressiveness. I agree with the poster on not doing something stupid to give the other team momentum. I think it is stupid to continually run the ball up the middle trying to run clock because you have a lead. I hope Ky plays this way (fearless) for the remainder of the season
