This is the first thread I have started since the loss. But we are about to have a logjam of talent. Imo it's going to be more than this season. You cannot tell me that Ulis will not win a title while he is here. That said. I expect we lose out on SOME recruits because I don't see some of these guys jumping to the NBA. I know for every marquise Teague and archie Goodwin. But I see lyles and Booker and dakari back. Maybe even aaron.... Maybe it's just me but I think we are DEEP in the backcourt like no other next year. Imo that's what wins titles. And we will have number nine soon enough. I have felt like crap all day. But I feel strongly that Ulis will bring us a title with the components year after year

I don't want to talk about the game. It's a travesty. But the platoon help us blowout the non conference. The three guard lineup help us in March. So what this tells me is we will be in the hunt for the forseable future

PG - Ulis - Briscoe
SG - Newman - (Booker) (Briscoe)
SF - Booker - Matthews
PF - Poythress - Lee
C - Johnson - Skal

Would be some quality depth. Newman and Booker with the potential to be top 10 picks.

If UK brought in this group next year, I think they'd be right back in the Final Four.

My thoughts exactly

Lyles & Aaron are gone. I just saw Aaron favorite a tweet that quoted him saying moving on from his brother is part of growing up.

When Booker does his research and realizes he's a top-20 pick, i expect him to be gone as well. Dakari is 50/50

So no, i don't expect a platoon. I do feel confident in Ulis running the show for the next 3 seasons. His future is bright & can't wait to see the improvements in his already refined game.

I'd really like us to land a scoring SF in this class with Brown. I truly think that Brown and Newman need to be the recruiting focus point for Cal. We have Skal already and I think we will land at least 1 more big in this class. Is the Wynard kid in the 2015 or 16 class? I was thinking he was 2016 for some reason but I could be wrong. I think we need a unbelievable class again cause I think we will lose 7 to the draft. WCS, KAT, Aaron, Andrew, Devin, Trey, and Dakari are all going to leave in my honest opinion. I think Cal will advise them all to go if they're projected near the 1st round and I just think the twins are gone no matter where they're projected. I had heard that these were the ones who were going to leave a few weeks ago. Unless this loss changes something, I'm preparing for these to go. These guys are truly a different breed, so hopefully theyre REALLY different than most and some stay, however unlikely.

The only platoon next years team should see will have Charlie sheen in it. Furthermore, it better include some type of "teaching moment". Cal has mentioned he really only wants a 7 man rotation maybe 8. In the end, I think we lose 5 players.

Aaron's tweet could also mean that he is staying and his brother is moving on. Andrew is probably a late first rounder.

He's not.

While it could mean one of them stays, i just don't think thats a real possibility.

I expect a tighter 6-7 man rotation next year.

G Ulis
G Newman
G Booker
F Poythress
F Labissiere

G Briscoe- backcourt sub.
F Lee- backcourt sub.

If Booker leaves or we don't get Newman or another stud guard, move Briscoe into the starting lineup and Hawkins or Matthews replaces Briscoe as the backcourt sub.

I doubt we miss on all our wing targets. We will get Newman, Brown, or Ingram. Worst case scenario we bring in a graduate transfer. I think it's most likely that we get Newman.

Newman is not a wing and Ingram isn't coming to our shade of blue anyway. Newman wants to play PG and lots of talking heads have been pointing to LSU because he really wants to play PG in college. However, I have a hard time believing that he has waited this long forany reason other than waiting on UK's roster to finalize. Also, maybe to see what Kansas players return. Brown is the only elite option at the SF position for us.

I would have to think that most big time high school stars would not like the platoon system and I doubt Cal goes that route anymore.

Platoon???? Unless Cal pulls a magic rabbit out of his hat we are not going to be deep or nearly as talented next year

This is how it keeps playing out in my head. I really would like to add Brown. He is a true 1 and done talent that truly appears to value the team concept. Every time I have seen him play I come away impressed. Recently, I have been disheartened by the comments and insinuations that he is not seriously considering UK. He seems like the perfect fit and his family could easily come see him play----unlike UCLA, and Kansas or (Cal---seriously??). This young man would be my number 1 priority if I'm Cal. Can u imagine the athleticism between Poy and Brown? What a talented set of forwards. If everyone leaves, I don't see how we can't sell the young man on the available playing time here. Would seem to be the perfect fit to me. Anyone have any insight into Brown's particular leanings or desires? Thanks in advance.

Platoon won't happen next season. All these top 10 recruits are waiting on who goes and who stays. If players stay they won't come. If players go they will come. Last season was the perfect storm. All the incoming players signed with full expectations that the Twins/WCS and possibly another of Alex or Dakari were going to be gone. Now recruits are on hold waiting on decisions which is smart on their part.

If true, I can't see how we couldn't sell Brown on the available pt. I did hear that Cal is going to see Ingram for an in-home soon. Not sure if this is a cover the bases type move or if this is a sign that Cal doesn't feel well about Brown. If we do have 7 defections, we would have plenty of room for Brown, newman and at least another big....hopefully Maker I guess. Not as sold on Big Z,but I trust Cal on these matters.

We only did platoon system during games that were not close. We were able to do it most the season because our schedule allowed. Once games got tight we did not use the platoon system.

I agree with this. Particularly Booker. Dakari could still come back and improve but I think Booker is around top 20 regardless of whether he returns.

We are absolutely not getting Brown, just take that guy off your radar.

There is a chance with Ingram, making a late push and definitely in the mix here.

I did not like the platoon system. I hope that it isn't used again no matter who stay or goes.

IMO it would hurt recruiting and I just did not think the two teams melded good when the platoons had to be broken. I would like to see a good 8 man rotation not a platoon system. I would like to see starters getting near 30 minutes a game or more. If you had bench players near as good as the starters maybe split the playing time a little more. I do not think your starters having just a little over 20 minutes a game is a good thing. After all are not your starters supposed to be your five best players.

Without Booker:

G Ulis
G Briscoe
G Newman
F Poythress
F Labissiere

F Lee- frontcourt sub.
G Matthews or Hawkins- backcourt sub.

That team runs the DDMO almost exclusively. No big, back to the basket player to post up every possession, so Cal is forced to go with the DDMO.

Newman, Briscoe, and Ulis can all drive the ball, so it won't matter who the PG is or the wings. In a motion offense, all three will be at the "point" at times. Our three bigs are above the rim type guys who do not need to post up to score.

That team seems ideal for the DDMO. All three guards want to have the ball in their hands and attack the rim. The big men need to rebound and catch lobs.

Depth could be a problem, though, unless we sign some more players.

Would be a fun team to watch.

Yes, he is. I've seen him play live. He's best off the ball. He should be a college shooting guard. Really depends on whether he sees himself solely as a point guard, though. That's what LSU is selling him on right now.

Newman reminds me a bit of Jrue Holiday. Given talent, could play either guard spot in college. However, for those of you doubting, remember, Eric Bledsoe played the 2-guard in Cal's system and he's doing okay.

I mean, ANYONE can see that Tyler Ulis is going to be the facilitator of the UK offense for the next 2-3 years. Anyone else has a great shot to compliment that, while showing other skills. Notably, Booker and Newman.

UK is the best fit for Newman, IMHO.

With Ulis and Briscoe, he doesn't have to be the primary ballhandler all the time, but will have the opportunity in the DDMO to handle the ball quite a bit.

I think we are getting ready to see a team like 2011 and 2012 again.

I liked the platoon system. If AP doesn't get hurt, maybe we did it a little longer this year. It made the other coach prepare for 2 teams with different matchup problems. With a new and young team, this concept would allow Cal to see who can do what in real games on the college level. Who plays well with who? Special line up to close games (ex. everyone can shoot Ft's).

I think by the mid point of the season Cal will know what he has got. Then tighten up the lineup. Run more specific plays and game time situations. Throw defenses at the starting 5. Mix it up on them in practice. Make them guard different offenses.

I would love to get Brown, or another SF. Newman will be needed to spread the floor and shoot 3's. Give me any other big. Let them all eat and compete.

Offensive talent may be better, depending on departures. Will be while before we have a team as long and skilled as this year's squad.

@W2R Since you like to dig up old threads I thought I'd return the favor. You were spot on man. We are even more loaded this year than last year. The platoon 2.0 is working perfect! I'm so glad Trey, Devin, Dakari and Aaron came back. I don't know where we'd be without them.

It's crazy how spot on you were. It's like you could see the future. Wish I had your instincts.

In all seriousness, I Hope you realize that we all say things that end up being wrong. That's life. But to keep digging up old threads on posters because you want to make them look bad is kinda sad and borders on pathetic.

Where the heck are you guys finding these . I sure hope you don't find the thread where I predicted Brisco would be our leading scorer because he draws a lot of fouls and will develop into a much better shooter than advertised . Or anything I posted following Skals all star games . LOL !

Because W2R had brought back 2-3 threads from months ago to ridicule posters for opinions that turned out to be wrong. So I decided to give him a taste of his own medicine.
I never ever criticized a player, Coach or recruit or decision like you have. I didn't mean to single you out , but if your conscious is burning that bad I can. You have shown your displeasure with Cal and recruiting, your have dissed recruits. You have bitched about a 38 straight win season with no championship Saying you rather lost 11 games and get people back

Sure we are all wrong on predictions. But you pouncing on Cal and recruits have been in bad taste. Not just since the board changed over. I can use the "way back" website and show people what you thought of Calipari and stuff waaaay before you trashed briscoe and others. Do you want to go down this road or admit you post off emotion. I will let it go if you do

Wait... So you're called out for being a jackass so you call someone else out for thinking that some players might be back for a second or third year?

I shoulda never clicked that "show ignored messages"... My curiosity got the best of me. Classic dumbassery.
