You are right, he cannot tell the truth, and everybody knows it. That is why he wouldn't deny the rumor about UNLV. If he had, everyone would know that he is leaving.

Why doesn't he just lie? Not like he's unaccustomed to the practice.
Exactly! You guys are misreading this. If he were really going to Vegas, he'd just lie and say "no I'm not" to put it to bed. He's not going to Vegas, he's just putting this out there so Louisville will tell him how great he is and beg him to stay.

He doesn't want this to go away, he wants to keep the story going. His answer today did just that....

He seems to have a narcissistic need to be adored by the masses. By not shooting down the rumor, he is trying to draw attention to how much UL fans love him and drive a wedge between the UL Administration and the fans' desire to keep him

Minnesota is not looking to replace Pitino yet. They aren't even close to having a new AD in place. The cost of his buyout and a good 2016 recruiting class is probably saving his job. If his team doesn't show significant improvement next year, I think it will be a whole different story.

Pitino Jr. addressed the "Rick to UNLV" rumors and said he would not want to raise his children in Las Vegas. He also said he doesn't want to work for his dad again. (They didn't ask him though, "what if that's the best job offer you have after getting fired?"....) His responses certainly didn't shoot down the rumors of Rick considering the job.

Rick has a long contract extension already. (I think) Does UofL let him out of it if he wants to leave?

Speaking of buyouts, I think they are the most ridiculous concept in the world. I wish so much that I could do my job so poorly that my clients would pay me millions to go away. I mean seriously, how is this even a thing???

Pretty simple, they have a contract in place for a certain rate of pay for a certain amount of time. If they want out of the contract, they owe a certain amount. How is that hard to follow?

My personal belief is that Pitino will resign at the end of the season, but wants it to look like he's still in demand. That way (in his mind) he can go out with a little dignity.

Honest question, why would he resign? His bosses don't give a flip what he does and why would he walk away from millions of dollars? He has no integrity, we all know that, so walking away out of shame is out of the question. The only way he resigns is if Ramsey and/or Jurich go and they bring in a President who says enough is enough.

You're right that he wants to look like he's still in demand.

Things are going to get too hot for Mr. Pitino to stay at louisville. He may or may not take the UNLV position, but he will have plans in place by the end of the season. He has many options and coaching may not be where he ends up. However, I feel about 60% confident at this point that he will not be coaching at louisville next season. He has nothing to gain by staying.

Bingo. Give this man a cigar.

You resign before you get fired.

The only "leaving" scenario I can imagine is the NCAA coming down hard on the cards and Pitino resigning for the "good of the program" while also trying to make himself look heroic. Then jump on the first available job as in UNLV.
Timing would be important for this scenario. The NCAA dropping the hammer in March or April could make it work.
