According to ESPN radio, while visiting his aunt at the Happy Grove Senior Center in Lakeland Florida, Rick Pitino noticed a pick-up game on the facility gym floor. One of its residents caught Pitino’s eye. Sometimes big-time college recruiting means finding a player in non-traditional settings. It is not always the AAU circuit where you find a diamond in the rough. Pitino has gone yet a different route with his “One and Done” strategy.
Building on the success of Damien Lee, Pitino has signed still another "5th year" transfer. 79 year old Mervin Goldblat comes to Louisville from Georgetown University and 50 years in the waste management industry. Goldblat, still has one year of eligibility left because of leaving college in 1953 for the army during the Korean War prior to completing his final year of eligibility at Georgetown. Pitino, who is exploiting an NCAA loophole that covers those leaving for military service, hopes this senior transfer will add much needed maturity and senior leadership to replace Lee.
According to Pitino, “Blatty” has a very high basketball IQ on his good days and "has the best two handed set shot of anyone he has ever coached." Goldblat, led the Colonial league in rebounding in 1943 as a 6’3” power forward. Now at 5’11” Pitino believes Blatty new height lends itself more to spending time as a stretch 2 shooting guard. Pitino feels the training staff can coax another inch out of him. Goldblat said he was thrilled to be a part of L1C4 and expects to be enrolled in classes this semester.
