Patrick Ewing named Georgetown coach

Well... I wonder how many guys they really had a shot at? It'll make some headlines if thats what they were looking for.

Desperation hire.

It almost never works. Remember when Clyde Drexler got the Houston job (probably not- he went 19-39)? How's Chris Mullin working out for St. John's (22-43 so far, though he did make some progress this year). How'd Walt Hazzard fare at UCLA? Don't see a bright future with this.

Good hire!

Agreed...amazing how many people on here have no idea what Ewing has been doing since he left his playing career. If Dolan wasn't such a douchebag, Ewing should be the Knicks coach now. Ewing has been an up and coming coach for a while.

You all make it seem like home run hires are everywhere to be had...what other realistic options did GT have?

I like Pat Ewing, seems like a nice guy and by all accounts he's been busting ass as an assistant in the Association, so I'm all for him getting his shot but I feel like the play for G-town at this moment in time was to go outside the family.

Ewing has cred as an up and comer no doubt, but most of that is in the league. I'd be a tad bit concerned about his lack of experience with the modern college game.

I'm not a G-towner though with skin in the game. Hope it all works out, Hoyas are one of those programs that need to be relevant on a national level and advancing in the tourney.

Looks like he's put on a few Lbs lately..........

Name some that haven't. The list is far and few between. MJ himself bulked up. Charles is a porker, they are running it off anymore. That does make a difference. What's my excuse?

Like some posters said, a former player as head coach doesn't work out a majority of the time...but every now and then, it will and I think this is one of those times. Ewing has been one of the top assistants in the pros for a while now and a pretty successful one at that - Charlotte isn't exactly a powerhouse, but they have made the playoffs quite a few times this decade when he's been the top assistant. Also, he was Stan Van Gundy's top guy when the Magic made the finals in 2009 and the other years they were a contender. I think it's a great hire for Georgetown.

No head coaching experience of any kind.

No college coaching experience of any kind.

No recruiting experience of any kind.

Sure, great hire.

Ewing has been grinding as a NBA assistant since 2002. He has been waiting his turn but never given the opportunity to be given the head coaching nod in the NBA. If anything, he is over qualified for the Georgetown position. That being said, will be interesting to see if he wants to really grind through the recruiting periods putting endless hours on the road visiting recruits at their homes, going to AAU events during the summer. He would be smart to bring in a great staff to surround himself. I for one, hope he succeeds. Never liked the G'town program, but always liked Ewing.

Being an assistant in the NBA for 15 years and being a top assistant/associate head coach in NBA for years outweighs any college coaching experience. It's not like he has no coaching experience. If he can get some great assistants/recruiters it will do great. [eyeroll]

I agree with both of you. I think it's a very good hire as well. Yes, some kids today may not be all that familiar with his playing days but I'm sure that will be pointed out to them very quickly in the recruiting process as well as in publicity from the university right away. He has a good coaching background and huge NBA connections which will be very helpful in recruiting and he will be a very impressive individual any time he walks into a recruit's home, plus mommy and daddy will know who he is very well. He may or may not succeed in a big way at Georgetown but I think he is a risk worth taking for them.

Good possibly great hire. Some people just don't keep up with the NBA I guess. He is very well respected in the NBA coaching circles. Many have said he deserves a head coaching gig in the league and have wondered for years why he keeps getting passed over for retreads.

If their main priority was to get a coach from inside the "family" I'd have gone with Alonzo Mourning. He was not near the player Ewing was but I think Zo would have a better chance relating to todays players, and some guys may remember him playing for the Heat, but probably not, that was at least 10 years ago.

Always liked Ewing even tho he played for G-town. Didn't like his college coach tho in any way! I hope he succeeds being new coach. I'd say he has good eye for talent if he can just recruit well.

I don't follow this logic at all. You want someone with zero coaching experience rather than someone who has been an NBA assistant/assoc. head coach for 15 years? Why do you think Zo would relate better to today's players?

The 2nd half of your post illustrates the issue with this hire. Who does Ewing know in the college game? How is he going to get players? Is there going to be a coherent strategy to build a talent base?

Those are generally the things that hamstring these high-profile ex-player hires. Ewing has decent qualifications purely as a coach, but a college coach isn't purely a coach. He's a GM, Team President, and coach, all rolled into one. There is no draft in the college game, and no trades to make. The coach is the one who has to get himself players.

That's actually why I think Fred Hoiberg did so well. He came directly off an NBA front office, not coaching position, and seemed to have a clear plan on how to upgrade the talent at Iowa State. A lot of guys who've spent the majority of their careers in the NBA seem to lack that kind of plan.

You seem to be saying two things at the same time. On one hand, you are calling this a great hire. On the other hand, you seem to be saying that GT is settling due to not having other options.

As for me, I think it is a bad hire unless Ewing brings in some superb college assistants and then it might work.

Who inherited a much bigger mess than Hoiberg. And I'd still give Mullin 2 more years to see if he can turn things around. He clearly hasn't worked miracles, but he did go from 1 Big East win to 7.

If he does fail, well, different people are different. Hoiberg and Mullin can come from similar places, but maybe Hoiberg just had a much better grasp on what he needed to do to win.

Could be a real solid hire, he will attract the big center-power forward types probably. He will need to hire some good recruiting assistants, but the Gtown alumni should be fired up. This hire will also help sooth big John Thompson's hurt feelings over his son getting axed.

Called it when the job opened. He's been wanting to get into coaching for awhile and has been an nba assistant for years. He pretty much was the development piece behind Dwight Howard when he entered the league.

Also daddy John Thompson probably still had a lot of influence in the hire even though his son was fired.

Have no earthly idea whether he'll be a decent coach but he'll sure pack out the stands the first few games. Coz he's frickin Patrick Ewing.

He is Patrick F'n Ewing and has been an NBA assistant across multiple teams for years now. If youre a 4 or 5 star Big and don't think Patrick Ewing showing up at your door, talking about what it takes to make the Association, what NBA teams look for, how he can teach you to grow your game, etc holds weight then you are nuts

Georgetown is still a strong basketball brand. Diminished somewhat because of their place in the new Big East? Sure. It's probably a tier 3 program but still has history and holds weight. This keeps it in the family and should fire up the base

Could be a disaster but a solid gamble for Gtown
