Our Defense

How do you find guys who can play the ball hawking defense like Ole Miss is playing? Where do you find a defensive minded assistant who can drill that kind of defensive mentality into a team and then have them execute it while still having a dynamic offense?

Player quality is not SEC caliber.
That matters little at this point. Our defensive miscues are largely caused by lack of effort and intensity. How many times has Ole Miss just cut to the basket and no one is there? That has nothing to due with athletic ability. Has been that way all season. My worry when Pope was hired was his ability to have competent defensive teams. Completely unimpressed at this point.

Feels like more. Injuries killed this season it really hurts me bad because we were doing so well. They look cooked.
We handled UT just fine missing All three, but maybe UT just didn’t have time to scheme for it, but yeah, literally no point guard is a problem.

The uncontested 3s aren't really a mystery. We have zero guys who are quick or athletic enough to stay in front of their man off the dribble. So they sag off their man to hedge against that.

Defensive schemes can hide some of that, but the ball will always move faster than our players can rotate.

This. Without the 2 pgs we can’t stop initial ball screen penetration and then very rotation after is off.

Same on the offensive end…we are starting the O way too extended and aren’t even getting into the offense until 15 sec left of the shot clock.

1-3-1 had the most rotations and hardest to teach at a high level unless you spend a significant amount of time on it. 3-2 and 2-3 are the simplest to install with the least complex rotations.

We are undermanned due to injuries. Our horses are on the bench hurt.
I dont know why everyone is pretending that's not the case. Butler being out has a domino affect in every phase of the game. He's our best on ball defender first of all. And then when guys have to exert themselves more offensively playing PG it hurts their defensive.

Dude, our defense was just as bad when Butler played. Just as bad. Guess you missed when UF, MSU, and UGA had no problem scoring on UK with Butler.

It sure as hell makes it much harder to find something that works without your best defender. There have been stretches this year where the defense has been on the upswing. It's impossible to maintain that momentum with Kerr and Butler out.

That is patently false. There has not been one moment this entire year where UKs defense was on the upswing.

Pope's teams don't play D. That is an undeniable fact. Unless he grows a brain on how to get his teams to play D, you can expect more of the same as long as he is the coach.

There have been single games where we've jumped 20 spots in defensive efficiency. We have had some good defensive performances this year when we've been healthy. This was never going to be a great defensive team, but at full strength, with both Butler's on ball defending and Kriisa's aggressiveness, it would have been good enough.

There’s not much Pope can do unless he perfects a good zone. Tried it one play in first half snd they hit a wide open corner three because Carr left his area open. Our guys are just not quick and tough enough to guard one on one. Also, we have no rim protection at all from the help side.

I can't tell if we don't like to play defense or if we're just unwilling to do it. So many uncontested 3s is just mind numbing to me.

Better get used to it, Pope has never had an elite defensive team. Have a feeling it will continue to be like this
We don't need to have an elite defensive team. With our offense we just need to have one that's not dog crap. A few years ago he had a top 30 defense at BYU. That type of defense would make this a top 5 team no question. Last year BYU was ranked 60th on defense. Even that would be good enough to make this team a title contender.

Part of that is lack of shot blockers. Williams leads us with 1.5. I guess less playing time but Garrison is only getting 0.5 a game. That's on pace to be 1/3 of what he got last year.. Carr sitting at 0.5 too. We have to help out with our guards too deep on help side is part of the problem. Garrison had a chance at one today and didn't even jump and try to contest it.
