OT: JJ Redick to Become Coach of Lakers / Anthony Davis

I interviewed him once. He was a good chat. I hated him in college but felt sorry for the level of hate that guy received. Something we will probably never see again in the current era. The fans were brutal. BRUTAL. Maryland was probably the worst of all. One sign was talking about sleeping with his underage sister. Another by FSU or Wake was "I'm going to name my son J.J. and beat him every day."

There's worse that I'm probably forgetting.

I hate Duke, but loved watching him shoot in college.

These two ruled the 2005-2006 season. The big debate between the two for POTY.
Redick averaged 27 ppg. Morrison averaged 28 ppg.

Just an atrocious hire, very typical of the Lakers franchise of late.

Nothing against JJ but hiring someone with 0 coaching experience when you are one of the two IT NBA franchises is baffling.

I'm sure the usual suspects n the national media will say it's because he's white too soon enough. If he was purple this was a dumb hire IMO.

honestly who wants to take the Laker's job? It's a dumpster fire of a front office/owners. And you have to deal with the ego of LeBron James. I don't see any coaches outside of: Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, and Steve Kerr managing that personality. Actually, I have left with a lot of respect for Lue and Spolstra for managing it for as long as they did.

Agree on Lebron. Wish they would cut ties. He helped win them a title but he's never winning another in LA.

I just have to believe some qualified assistant coach would have came though if offered.

I mean Popes resume was light to be offered for the UK job but could you imagine UK hiring some former player with no coaching experience? Crazy.

JJ has zero coaching experience. But if LBJ likes him I guess that's all you need.

It's not a great job. You've got an aging LBJ and Davis's health is typically kinda iffy. Supporting cast isn't very good.

“The celtics won 11 titles against plummers”-Lakers fans

“Our 2020 NBA title won in a ballroom with no crowd is the hardest title in history”.

I’ve always rooted for the Celtics over them and hated the Lakers but I do allow the Davis title to be mainly because I like UK having a guy like Davis who’s won a title for Kentucky and a major NBA franchise. Lakers / Kentucky signed wingspan posters look great side by side. Just wish it had been the Celtics instead. Grew up a Celtics fan during the Pitino / UK team years.

Maybe in time people will forget it was a kitchen table paper ball championship.

I give him 2 years, they won’t win tin the West unless LeBron leaves and they use that money to get AD help. Regardless, even if they make the playoffs, Buss doesn’t know how to run them and will fire him early.
The Lakers never do anything without fleecing someone in a trade. That's their MO.

Kareem
Kobe
Gasol
AD

To some extent, the trade to get the first pick of the 1979 draft to get Magic.

That’s back when Jerry was alive and they ran the organization well though. Jeanie is more likely to get fleeced and overpay for old stars now.

There are 3 other coaches in the league who had zero coaching experience when they got tabbed as a HC...Doc Rivers, Steve Kerr and Jason Kidd. Will be interesting to see if JJ can have the same length career/success.

He's a really knowledgeable basketball guy. I could see him doing well.

I think he will be really good for Anthony Davis because he does everything that Redick is for.

I have been a Celtics fan for years and have always rooted against the Lakers despite AD being there. I like this hire because it just gives me another reason to dislike the Lakers, lol. Some here say JJ is an OK guy but I still see him in a Duke uniform. Good enough for me to hope he fails in LA. Guess you can see I'm no Laker fan, huh? Go Celtics! And, yes, I know (Tatum).

I think it's a good hire. Probably won't matter in the end, the roster sucks, and nobody is gonna be given enough time to fix it.

I cant believe a team like the lakers hired jj redick a person with ZERO COACHING EXPERIENCE. he has never coached any team even a pee wee basketball team in his life. all he has done is play and announce games.

Is he basically the only coach that wanted it? I know they interviewed several but as far as a 'name' guy was he it? Don't know why he would want to have to deal with James.

I for one can’t stand Redick. He’s a smug “I’m smarter than you” type and he has Dukie written all over him. You can tell who he played for. The Lakers are done until they decide to care about winning again. Right now they’re more into clicks and names instead of men who are there to win. The lakers aren’t in the business of winning and the hiring of JJR just proves it even more. They want to be known for things right now that are contradictory to winning. Honestly I don’t think they’ll ever get it back and the Celtics smell the blood in the water. When Kobe passed away so did the eras of laker dominance.

I mean, outside of Phil Jackson, they have had the following coaches since 2000:

Rudy Tomjanovich - 43 games
Frank Hamblem - 39 games
Mike Brown - 71 games
Bernie Bickerstaff - 5 games
Mike D'Antonio - 2 seasons
Byron Scott - 2 seasons
Luke Walton - 3 seasons
Frank Vogel - 3 seasons
Darvin ham - 3 seasons

A team like the Lakers has made some very meh hires over the years. The straight to the sideline from announcing has actually worked relatively well.

Nobody really goes to LA to win. They go there to live in LA, make movies. LA has always relied on the draw of LA. To win. Starting way back when with Wilt. Who wanted to go to LA because he wanted to date white women. And not be criticized for it. Kareem told the bucks LA would fit his lifestyle better. The bucks asked if it was anything they did wrong. He said no. He just wanted to live in LA. Same deal with Shaq. Bailed on Orlando to go to LA.
