BLOOMINGTON — Indiana has extended its apparel contract with Adidas in a deal that will nearly double the company’s annual payment to the Hoosiers from $3.7 million to $6.7 million, Director of Athletics Fred Glass confirmed to The Star on Monday.

According to IU, the deal worth $53.6 million over eight years is one of the five richest publicly known apparel deals in college athletics.

Why any brand would actually pay IU any amount of money to wear their gear i'll never know. At this point, the way IU plays basketball, they should be paying ADIDAS money to wear their shoe. As embarassing that program has become, i think that would be fair.

They lose recruits because of Adidas...AND....those idiotic candy-striped pajama bottoms they are forced to wear. That embarrassment alone should prevent them from getting any recruit with a lick of fashion sense.

Just for reference UK just reuped with Nike at 8 years/$30.6million.

Nike does way more than just cash. There's no much more money in those Nike deals it ain't even funny. Adidas always tries to make it look like more, but they give out very little in apparel and equipment.

That includes apparel and cash. UK gets $1.8mil cash and $1.725mil in apparel which increases $125k each year, that also includes $2.4mil signing bonus. Have yet to see the details of IU's contract. With Adidas losing ND and Michigan I had figured they'd do everything they could to keep IU, Nike just simply doesn't pay like Adidas, which is evident in the majority of their contracts sans Michigan. Nike and Under Armour did pitch to IU but I'm sure the money just wasn't there.

Indiana should be playing in Red Ball Jets or in Converse Chuck Taylors. I think that's what players were wearing the last time they were relevant.

Haha pretty much, Knight still had a Converse shoe contract his last year at IU. I was surprised to learn that until IU signed with Nike in 02, each department could have its own contract. Soccer had Adidas, Basketball had shoes with Converse and apparel with Logo Athletic, until Davis made a deal with Nike which then spread to 23 of 24 sports. Apparently a former player of our soccer team is a big wig in Adidas marketing so that's possibly where the adidas/IU relationship started. Either way i'll take the most money so it aides in buying Crean out when Brad Stevens becomes available. [winking]

Adidas has to pay more because even they know their product is inferior. There is a reason schools take less to go with Nike but go ahead and attach your anchor to that sinking ship IU.

Adidas will not get their $$ worth from IU football and basketball.
If I was other schools dealing with Adidas, I'm kicking the can down the line and getting a bigger deal than that.

Btw, from an economic stand point they can probably make room to pay IU more, because they'll have less overhead with them. They don't need to pay for a design team, or unique stitching, no high production techniques, etc. Just crimson jerseys that say indiana and have an adidas logo.

And think of all the money they can save on providing equipment since they play fewer games than most every year.
