OT: IOC adds 3 on 3 basketball for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

I love this idea. I see it similar to pairs in Tennis or the different volleyball team sizes.

Just a different format for a great game. If you've watched any 3v3, the spacing makes it pretty damn exciting.

Do you want a big guy? Assuming LeBron doesn't slow down significantly in that time period;
LeBron
Durant
Kawhi
Draymond
The two best players in the world with the two best defensive players.

It's more fun to come up with combinations from other teams, IMO.

Canada
Andrew Wiggins
Jamal Murray
Tristian Thompson
Kelly Olynyk? Cory Joseph? Nik Stauskas?

Dominic Republic
Karl Anthony Towns
Al Horford
Fransisco Garcia
Louis Montero? Charlie Villanueva?

Haiti
Nerlens Noel
Skal Labissierre
Samuel Dalembert?
An unknown guard?

Brazil
Leandro Barbosa
Maybyner Nene
Tiago Splitter
Lucas Noguiera? Anderson Varajao?

Germany
Dirk Nowitzki
Dennis Schroder
Paul Zipser
Carlos Boozer? Chris Kaman?

Spain
Marc Gasol
Pau Gasol
Ricky Rubio
Nikola Mirotic? Serge Ibaka?

France
Tony Parker
Rudy Gobert
Joakim Noah
Nicolas Batum

Australia
Kyrie Irving
Ben Simmons
Patty Mills
Dante Exum

Croatia
Bojan Bagnonovic
Dario Saric
Ivaka Zubac
Justin Hamilton

Obviously, Canada would have to be the second ranked team after whoever America decides to send. As for #3? France? Spain? Looking at who is currently in the NBA from different countries to make up a 4 man roster makes things interesting.

For fun, USA
LeBron James
Stephon Curry
Russell Westbrook
Anthony Davis
Draymond Green?
Kevin Durant?
Kwani Leonard?

What a hard time it would be selecting 4 players for such a tournament. I'd want the most athletic big available, the best one on one scorer, and the best 3pt shooter. That's how I ended up with my four. I figure Westbrook would make for a great jack of all trades if I needed to sub out someone. You could put James inside for AD without much penalty at all or swap Westbrook for either James or Curry without upsetting the differences in size or ability much at all. Westbrook can go one on one or be a sharpshooter.

US should dominate. But it will be a little easier for other countries to field a team with 3 really good players and 1 sub, as opposed to putting together a complete roaster for 5 on 5.

The qualification system will be the big question. I see that FIBA and IOC will announce that tidbit at a later date.

Fab Melo RIP. Did you miss that?

Lempface,

I had forgotten and feel bad for doing so. It's so sad to see such talented youngsters with big dreams die at such an early age. RIP MELO.

Thanks for the correction. I'll take him off the list out of respect.

Canada has a wealth of talent in the NBA right now. Choosing which 4 are most talented is a challenge.

Andrew Wiggins is a given, but after that they still have 11 players currently in the NBA. As a UK fan, I want to put Murray and Lyles without a doubt, but I could see other people thinking differently.

Plus, I'm sure Steve Nash would look to represent his country once more despite him being retired from the league.

You've got,
Steve Nash (probably)
Andrew Wiggins
Jamal Murray
Trey Lyles
Joel Anthony
Tyler Ennis
Tristian Thompson
Andrew Nicholson
Dwight Powell
Nik Stauskas
Kyle Wiltjer
Kelly Olynyk

All currently playing in the NBA. Other than Wiggins, a lot of them are close to each other from a statistical standpoint. I still think Lyles and Murray would be hard to pass up, but there's some pretty good other players on that list from up north. Lots of players that can shoot the 3 EXTREMELY well, surprisingly...

What is up with Canada producing so many sharpshooters and so few actual big men?

Will guys want to play in both though? Could see a lot of the dream picks saying "no thanks" and just sticking to the full team.

It's cool to see it in the Olympics, but I'd love to see it as a legitimate competition among American players only too.

Put a few hundred million dollars on the line and see how it shakes out. Sell it as a PPV in 3-4 installments. It'd pay for itself.

Well hope for Ice Cubes 3 on 3 tournament to be successful. I can't wait for it

3 on 3 there is no helping on D or hiding a bad defender, so any candidate has to be a good defender. After narrowing down to that, you want a mobile big, a shooter, a ball handler.

I'd be tempted to go Davis, Durant, Leonard, with a better ball handler as the sub.

If it's the usual 3 on 3 rules where a normal "2" is 1 point and a "3" is 2 points then it is all about shooting.

I remember the very first Winn Dixie Streetball in Louisville I played in 30+ years ago. We went in with three big guys. Our first game we literally scored on every possession, all layups over smaller defenders. We lost 16-14 to a team that hit eight 2 point shots and just smiled and congratulated us on being so hard to guard inside. It was a lesson learned.

I'd like to see it as an amateur competition to harken back to the old Olympic days. Kids currently in high school who might still be amateur in 2020. Romeo Langford would be deadly.

What's not to like about this idea? It's not replacing 5 on 5.
