OT: EKU Question

I graduated from EKU many moons ago. In those days EKU was an ovc power under Kidd, but since then its been mostly mediocrity. I heard today from a current student that EKU is transitioning to D1. Is this true, and with all the changes in NCAA alignment I' m a bit confused on what that exactly entails? Any info would be appreciated.
