Have not watched them in years for that exact reason. Platform for politcal views and I love me speeches. Way too many award ceremonies too. Let's all tell these people how great they are.Originally posted by Desperado_1955:
It's the dumbass political rhetoric that makes me NOT want to watch the Oscars. I don't give an ish which side of the aisle somebody claims to be on, but when the acceptance speeches turn into "let me tell you about my latest cause" I get mad as hell. How about next time just touching talk about the movie, thank your GD director and producer, etc. and move along.
And yet, some people here, have a conniption when there's a chance that a "conservative" movie, a great one at that, can take home some hardware. God for bid half the nation can have just a sliver of Hollywood.Originally posted by HeismanCatNole85:
The Oscars are always the exact outcome as the SAG awards. They always cream themselves over the same bait performances.
- Biopic
- disabled character
- gay
- British royalty
- AIDS
- Holocaust survivor
If you can combine two of those, you're a guarantee for an Oscar.
You also, got to love the narcissism from some of these actors. Acting like you shed a light on Alzheimer's ?seriously? Calling performances 'brave.' Remember Clooney crediting Hollywood with being ahead of the civil rights movement for his speech?
You mean like Saving Private Ryan, Unforgiven and Zero Dark Thirty? Sorry, I don't get your comment. Exactly what is a conservative or liberal movie? The two nominees I saw this year were about Alzheimers disease, and a has been movie actor trying to revive his career as an stage performer in a serious broadway play he funded. How are those liberal/conservative? If there was a political point in either one, then I completely missed it.Originally posted by LineSkiCat:

I liked it, didn't love it like I did Moonrise Kingdom. (MK was one of those movies where every scene worked. I remember staring at the screen afterward just feeling like it had nailed everything it set out to do.) Budapest gets a little too cute or something about midway through, and the plot doesn't hang together as the movie goes along. There's a lot of intentional silliness as there is in all his movies, but in this movie some of it comes off a little grating.Originally posted by Tskware:

LOL, yes the Academy had a brain fart there. SPR did win five other Oscars though, including best director for Spielberg, so it was not exactly snubbed.Originally posted by Bill Derington:
Saving Private Ryan didn't win best picture, the timeless classic Shakespeare In Love beat it.
And that is the very small list of movies some would label as having conservative talking points. And to be honest I'm not sure SPR or Unforgiven are really all that "Conservative". Pretty sure Spielberg and Damon wouldn't think so.Originally posted by Tskware:

Sure, Selma had an overtly political theme, and if you think equal voting rights for blacks in the 60s espouses a "liberal" point of view, then OK, I get it. I suppose if one is inclined to see politics in every form of entertainment or media, then you can always find something to take offense to. Uber liberal Michael Moore sure seemed offended by American Sniper, although it was based on a true story.
To me, I just like going to the movies.
Can't say I disagree with you there, but unfortunately, at least IMO, that is more a function of being rich and powerful than simply being an actor or director. Being around blow hard politicians (left or right) all day long would make me want to kill myself, for pretty much the same reason.Originally posted by LineSkiCat:

Yeah, poor Clint & Co. I bet he'll think twice about making another $300 Million (and counting) flop like that again!Originally posted by The_Catfather:
Not familiar with any of the movies, but glad to hear that American Sniper got snubbed in every major category. Hannity and the other loonies are having meltdowns on Twitter.
So you're glad a movie got snubbed so you can rub in on your political rivals? Myopic.....Originally posted by The_Catfather:

Well, I also think it has to do with schooling. Let's just say that acting school or a school of the arts isn't going to give you fair political viewpoint. I agree, politicians are still the worst, but I think everyone knows that lol. Hollywood is almost just as disingenuous, and in some ways, holds more power than the politicians. Politics aside, they really are an insufferable group. Glad I didn't watch, and haven't watched the Oscars in years.. or any award show for that matter.Originally posted by Tskware:

Yep, that was funny!Originally posted by Chuckinden:
I only caught a few minutes of it and saw where "Citizenfour" the Eric Snowden story, won for best documentary. After the woman gave a political acceptance speech about how great a person Snowden is, Neil Patrick Harris said Eric Snowden couldn't be here tonight for some "treason".
I thought that was funny.
Agree that MK was special. Still thought GBH was wonderful, and Ralph Fiennes deserved a nomination. He absolutely nailed it.Originally posted by Joneslab:

Still well worth watching.
This isn't a fair comment because I've only seen three or four of the nominees, but IMO the last two years have been subpar for movies on the whole. Three years ago--the year of Argo and Moonrise Kingdom and a bunch of other movies--was an incredible year. Seems like we've seen a lot of near-misses the last two years.
I appreciated Birdman and felt like the first 30 minutes were incredible, but it's a very flawed movie.
I don't watch the Oscars because it's the Oscars....but I can see why people would avoid it because of the political messages in speeches...I mean, who really gives a damn what an actor/director has to say about any political issue - no matter what side they are fighting for.Originally posted by GonzoCat90:
Some of you really "don't watch" the Oscars because of politics? Really?
Exactly. My biggest issue with these awards is just how self-important and pompous they have become. The shows them selves aren't all that political (although they do touch on many social issues).. I just can't watch that suck-fest. Chances are there is a college basketball game I can catch..Originally posted by CatsFanGG24:

If their movie is 100% about a political angle, then go for it during your speech...If not, leave it be.
