Oscars Thread

Bending over backwards trying to make up for the snubs for Selma. Too bad they're a day late and a dollar short.

Not familiar with any of the movies, but glad to hear that American Sniper got snubbed in every major category. Hannity and the other loonies are having meltdowns on Twitter.

It's the dumbass political rhetoric that makes me NOT want to watch the Oscars. I don't give an ish which side of the aisle somebody claims to be on, but when the acceptance speeches turn into "let me tell you about my latest cause" I get mad as hell. How about next time just touching talk about the movie, thank your GD director and producer, etc. and move along.

Agree on the political causes.

I only saw Birdman and Still Alice. Really wish I had seen Budapest Hotel, and some friends just saw Boyhood and thought it was great. Amazing to keep the same cast together for 12 years.

As for American Sniper, I will probably watch at some point, but for some reason it just struck me as Hurt Locker, Part II. Sort of been there, done that type of story.

I only caught a few minutes of it and saw where "Citizenfour" the Eric Snowden story, won for best documentary. After the woman gave a political acceptance speech about how great a person Snowden is, Neil Patrick Harris said Eric Snowden couldn't be here tonight for some "treason".

I thought that was funny.

The Oscars are always the exact outcome as the SAG awards. They always cream themselves over the same bait performances.

- Biopic
- disabled character
- gay
- British royalty
- AIDS
- Holocaust survivor

If you can combine two of those, you're a guarantee for an Oscar.

You also, got to love the narcissism from some of these actors. Acting like you shed a light on Alzheimer's ?seriously? Calling performances 'brave.' Remember Clooney crediting Hollywood with being ahead of the civil rights movement for his speech?

Have not watched them in years for that exact reason. Platform for politcal views and I love me speeches. Way too many award ceremonies too. Let's all tell these people how great they are.

And yet, some people here, have a conniption when there's a chance that a "conservative" movie, a great one at that, can take home some hardware. God for bid half the nation can have just a sliver of Hollywood.

I loved the scene in Unforgiven when William Munny shot Little Bill for trying to raise taxes. And Private Ryan was only saved because he was a Haliburton heir.

I liked it, didn't love it like I did Moonrise Kingdom. (MK was one of those movies where every scene worked. I remember staring at the screen afterward just feeling like it had nailed everything it set out to do.) Budapest gets a little too cute or something about midway through, and the plot doesn't hang together as the movie goes along. There's a lot of intentional silliness as there is in all his movies, but in this movie some of it comes off a little grating.

Still well worth watching.

This isn't a fair comment because I've only seen three or four of the nominees, but IMO the last two years have been subpar for movies on the whole. Three years ago--the year of Argo and Moonrise Kingdom and a bunch of other movies--was an incredible year. Seems like we've seen a lot of near-misses the last two years.

I appreciated Birdman and felt like the first 30 minutes were incredible, but it's a very flawed movie.

Saving Private Ryan didn't win best picture, the timeless classic Shakespeare In Love beat it.

LOL, yes the Academy had a brain fart there. SPR did win five other Oscars though, including best director for Spielberg, so it was not exactly snubbed.

If you go back through AA history, there have been plenty of other "WTF were they thinking" awards, but that is one of the worst, for sure. Look at who won best actor/actress down through the years, and who was nominated but didn't win, and you will see what I mean.

There's definitely been some odd choices Over the years.

I watched Boyhood over the weekend and wasn't too impressed. I know it'd be hard to keep an even flow of the movie over the 12 year period, but it just seemed off to me. And I thought Arquette was downright bad in it, I can't believe she won an Oscar. I thought Hawke was far better than she was in it.

The minute it became apparent that regular people liked American Sniper, it was screwed.

And yet, some people here, have a conniption when there's a chance that a "conservative" movie, a great one at that, can take home some hardware. God for bid half the nation can have just a sliver of Hollywood.
You mean like Saving Private Ryan, Unforgiven and Zero Dark Thirty? Sorry, I don't get your comment. Exactly what is a conservative or liberal movie? The two nominees I saw this year were about Alzheimers disease, and a has been movie actor trying to revive his career as an stage performer in a serious broadway play he funded. How are those liberal/conservative? If there was a political point in either one, then I completely missed it.

Sure, Selma had an overtly political theme, and if you think equal voting rights for blacks in the 60s espouses a "liberal" point of view, then OK, I get it. I suppose if one is inclined to see politics in every form of entertainment or media, then you can always find something to take offense to. Uber liberal Michael Moore sure seemed offended by American Sniper, although it was based on a true story.

To me, I just like going to the movies.
And that is the very small list of movies some would label as having conservative talking points. And to be honest I'm not sure SPR or Unforgiven are really all that "Conservative". Pretty sure Spielberg and Damon wouldn't think so.

Certain agendas get represented in Hollywood, is my point. And as much as I am sick of that cesspool of a community being politically one-sided, at this point I'm more repulsed by just how smug and self-important they are. I'm over the former, their political side, for the most part. It is what it is, some industry's are heavily influenced by the Right.. some by the Left.

But what I don't want to hear is someone whining about a conservative movie winning awards in an inudtry running rampant with liberal views, figure-heads, and agendas. As I said, God forbid half the country gets a small piece of the action.

Can't say I disagree with you there, but unfortunately, at least IMO, that is more a function of being rich and powerful than simply being an actor or director. Being around blow hard politicians (left or right) all day long would make me want to kill myself, for pretty much the same reason.

Saving Private Ryan wasn't a great movie. The first movement was technically incredible, but otherwise it's kind of a pedestrian war movie.

Not sure that it or American Sniper being snubbed suggests any political bias. Hell, genre filmmakers have battled for years to get some respect from the Academy.

I disagree about saving private Ryan, it's lost some luster since it came out, but it was unlike anything war movie before it, the landing scene was unreal. It was far superior to Shakespeare in love,

Yeah, poor Clint & Co. I bet he'll think twice about making another $300 Million (and counting) flop like that again!

So you're glad a movie got snubbed so you can rub in on your political rivals? Myopic.....

Saw the real Alice speak live at a conference earlier this month. What a charismatic woman.

And yet, some people here, have a conniption when there's a chance that a "conservative" movie, a great one at that, can take home some hardware. God for bid half the nation can have just a sliver of Hollywood.
You mean like Saving Private Ryan, Unforgiven and Zero Dark Thirty? Sorry, I don't get your comment. Exactly what is a conservative or liberal movie? The two nominees I saw this year were about Alzheimers disease, and a has been movie actor trying to revive his career as an stage performer in a serious broadway play he funded. Well, I also think it has to do with schooling. Let's just say that acting school or a school of the arts isn't going to give you fair political viewpoint. I agree, politicians are still the worst, but I think everyone knows that lol. Hollywood is almost just as disingenuous, and in some ways, holds more power than the politicians. Politics aside, they really are an insufferable group. Glad I didn't watch, and haven't watched the Oscars in years.. or any award show for that matter.

Moving on.. As for SPR, how could anyone not love that movie?! You could take out that entire opening scene and it would still be absolutely jaw-dropping. And gut-wrenching (spoiler)... does anyone aside from Private Ryan live? That movie is like one of the horror genre... 15 main characters go in, and only one comes out at the end. Excellent, timeless movie.

I thought that was funny.
Yep, that was funny!

I don't think half of that audience caught it, though... and it probably went over the head of many of the ones that did.

I thought NPH did a decent job.

Some of you really "don't watch" the Oscars because of politics? Really? That even tops the anti-Olbermann crowd. I just can't imagine looking at the world through that lens. How do you manage to enjoy anything? Movies, music, sports, TV--if you're that sensitive to "political speech" then you're going to avoid all of them.

And for God's sake, please stop trying to make American Sniper into a conservative film. It's a story, not an ideology. Just because the Toby Keith facebook fan group crowd loved it because its main character shoots terrorists doesn't make it some pro-war movie. It's the story of Chris Kyle, who has a remarkable story, just like movies about Malcolm X or Harvey Milk or whoever. If you're above 7th grade, it's entirely possible to disagree with any or all of the characters or events in those movies and still find the story compelling.

I actually think Birdman was probably the right choice. Boyhood was the best concept and all that, and it's a great achievement, but it's not actually as good of a movie. This year wasn't amazing at the top, but that next tier, the Nightcrawler, Gone Girl, etc. area, had some very good ones.

Agree that MK was special. Still thought GBH was wonderful, and Ralph Fiennes deserved a nomination. He absolutely nailed it.

I don't watch the Oscars because it's the Oscars....but I can see why people would avoid it because of the political messages in speeches...I mean, who really gives a damn what an actor/director has to say about any political issue - no matter what side they are fighting for.

If their movie is 100% about a political angle, then go for it during your speech...If not, leave it be.

Exactly. My biggest issue with these awards is just how self-important and pompous they have become. The shows them selves aren't all that political (although they do touch on many social issues).. I just can't watch that suck-fest. Chances are there is a college basketball game I can catch..
