Ohio St new coach

8 years..... $3M per year.

Can someone say, "Financial Security"?

Even if canned say 3 years in, that's one helluva buyout coming.

Win - win for Coach Holtmann. He had OSU over a barrel with the timing of the hire, looks they had been tuned down by a couple guys, he had advantage and took it.

I am generally not prescient but I predicted this yesterday on tis brd when others pointed at Chris Mack. Holtman is an excellent coach and OSU had fe if any better alternatives this year. Their cupboard is fairly bare. Holtman is young and has done well in a tough conference with limited resources.

I'll just never understand these AD's. Absolutely no reasok to offer 8 years. Let him walk damn. If he doesnt work out their AD just handcuffed that program for nearly a decade.

it's GOT to be a University friendly or something. 8 years is crazy.

Just saw he was making 3 million at Butler. 1. wow 2. this obviously is for as much if not more. Insane decision. Insane. Even if he's good, OSU wasn't bidding against anyone.

Big Ten network generates so much $$ that $3 million is chicken scratch if this hire proves out.

I would say the last few years are University friendly.

The coach and AD knows this isn't going to be a fast turn around. The entire 2015 class has already left and they didn't sign a top 50 player this year. I don't blame the coach for demanding a long contract. I'm guessing OSU will be terrible next year and everyone knows it.

8 years to turn around a basketball program in the big10? Please. 8 years is totally ridiculous unless your name is big time. This guy should have been laughed out the room. People seem to be stuck i. 1975. With the recources these programs have today you dont even need 4 years to build a football roster, let alone a basketball roster.

8 years is beyond ridiculous for an unproven coach at a program like OSU.

3M at Butler? Where did you see that?

You thought OSU would have learned with the extension on Coach Matta and that they still owed him 3 or 4 years at approx. $9 million buyout. In Columbus, Ohio that is what most Ohio State basketball fans are hearing is that Ohio State couldn't afford the big homerun hire was because of Matta's buyout and then the new Contract for a Head Coach. Fans are upset because in Football they will do anything and pay any amount to get the right hire for a Head Coach. They feel in Men's Basketball it is always at the bottom on spending money for a Head Coach. They could have easily hit a homerun with a big time hire if they would offered a big time contract.

OSU is more of a football school with some nice success in basketball. It's not like it's a top tier blue blood.

The cupboard is bare this year , recruiting fell off bc of all the shiz that went down. You gotta think it may take a "normal" (not Cal, K, Self, Miller etc ) 2-4 years to actually start recruiting at a high level consistently , then a couple years from there to see how it pans out

8 years seems a bit excessive, 5-6 would have been better imo but I don't think it's absolutely outlandish

As reported and everyone knows, ohio state put feelers out there for a few coaches with no bites/ turned down

After publicly getting hardcore embarrassed by being turned down by CREIGHTON'S coach after offering more than twice his current salary, they had to move quick.

Maybe they had to include the 8 years to convince him? I don't know. For a top 10 basketball school to be turned down by the coach at CREIGHTOM so publicly, they were probably embarrassed enough to offer anything to sign him and do it quickly.

Almost embarrassing as the time the basketball player turned down a Kentucky scholarship to go to prep school...

May be a good hire but slightly ironic OSU fired former Butler coach Matta to hire the current Butler coach,

Don't misunderstand my understanding of why the coach would request a long contract with belief that OSU had to grant it to get their coach. (I really have no clue if they could have gotten him with fewer years.

Here are my unbiased thoughts and I don't have any emotional connection to the OSU program. So, these are just my thoughts as a businessman.

1. Most new coaches get 5 year contracts. (Someone can research the avg length of new contracts for p5 teams.)
2. Recruiting is hamstrung anytime a coach has less than 4 years left on his contract and recruiting has been a problem for OSU.
3. New coach will be given latitude to fix the program, so they would be adding 1 year to his contract after next year. Might as well make it 8 years on the front side and send a message to recruits.
4. If the new coach outperforms expectations in the next couple of years then better programs will come after him. I'm sure the contract is school friendly on the back end.
5. The buyout is pocket change with the television $ the schools now get.

Again, I don't care what they do. I do understand why they did it and think it makes good business sense. Good decisions are in the eye of the beholder, thus why chat rooms exist ;-)

Btw - I agree 100% with you that turning around a basketball program is much easier than turning around a football program. ONE outstanding player puts you on the map.

Won't be nearly as ironic as when Butler hires Matta and has OSU paying his salary.

Butler AD loves Matta. I've been told he has already been offered the chance to return.

Rupp once said, "I can take my bunch and beat you, or I can take your bunch and give you my bunch and still beat you." Would love to see Matta at Butler and play OSU in an early season tourn. Matta would have a lot of pressure to win with Butler's preseason predictions.
