Offensive Play Calling Question

I have seen in pretty much every game where the defense looks lost and has to rush into position at the last second before the ball is hiked. The thing I rarely see is the offense hiking the ball during the scramble to get in position by the defense. So do you all think it is better to wait for them to get into position so you can get a better idea what formation they are in? Or just hiking it and trying to catch their players out of position to make a play on the ball? I think SC tried to catch us out of position on one pay and they did but we were fortunate to get a timeout called to stop that I believe. It looked like they would have burned us on that play without a timeout called. That is why I wonder why more teams don't try doing that?

Only on short yardage situations. On 1st and 10 there isn't that much of an advantage. The offense is better off snapping the ball when they are ready and not care about the defense.

In general if you snap the ball while the defense is shifting around, it should be at least a slight advantage for the offense.

However, it's hard to do. Most offenses line up to see what the defense lines up to reveal to them.......instead of the old fashion huddle. The offense will take some time to assess blitzes, assign the Mike, assign blocking, etc. This takes time......and they have to freeze for a few seconds before they can snap the ball so as not to get called for a false start.

And if the offense changes the playcall, they will pause to see if the defense changes their play.

This allows time for the defense to get set.

First. You should only do it on a run play.
Second. When the ball is snapped the blockers may look as confused as the defenders because their assignment may not be in the proper place.

However, if the dline is standing up, especially the NG and is not looking and I am 6'4 240 I am tapping the center and going QB sneak for a minimum of 5 yards.

The only pass play considered would be the same one you use for an offsides flag, go route to your best wr, Mumme's team were very good for that. The negative is that this a low completion type play and unlike the offsides you don't get the play over if you miss.

Off subject a bit, Jason Anderson on Louisville radio last night was praising Dawson for how he set up the Towles’ rushing first down on that last drive by pointing out that UK ran the same play each time out of the formation that had Boom and Jo Jo in the back field together. The Towles’ run had the defense expecting the same play. That was good to hear, if accurate.
