We’ve been arguing about the fault of this team. The film/eyes and the numbers are telling us…it’s the offensive line.
Im not big on Scang…but this line isn’t a group Yenser or hom recruited. They were inexperienced and learning a new system. People say Coen this and that…but let’s compare the 2 lines…because Liam Coen had an elite offensive line IMO and Scang has maybe the worst we’ve had since 2013.
2021
LT: Dare Rosenthal- 6’7 330lbs, 4th year of college, started a year at LSU in 2020 and 3 games on the national championship team. Signed NFL contract.
LG: Kenneth Horsey- 6’3 300lbs, 4th year of college, 2nd year of starting
C: Luke Fortner- 6’6 300lbs, 6th year senior, 5th year of starting games. NFL Starter this year
RG: Eli Cox- 6’4 295lbs, 3rd year of college, was a mid-season All-American per ESPN
RT: Darrian Kinnard- 6’5 345lbs, 4th year of college and 4th year starting games. Consensus 1st team All-American, NFL draft pick.
2022
LT: Kenneth Horsey, 6’3 300lbs, 5th year senior, started 3 years as a guard but now playing out of position at tackle
LG: Jager Burton, 6’4 300lbs, 2nd year of college and no real playing experience coming into the year
C: Eli Cox, 6’4 295lbs, 4th year of college, started in 2021 as a guard and now out of position playing center
RG: Tashawn Manning, 6’4 330lbs, 6th year senior and started the previous 2 years at Auburn
LT: Jeremy Flax, 6’6 330lbs, 3rd year of school and 0 starts coming into 2022
Comparing them…
Tackle: Kinnard/Rosenthal were 2 senior…elite talent/size players with experience. Replace them with 2 guys who never started a game…1 guy is undersized and out of position.
Guard: Cox/Horsey were a strong duo on the inside…Manning has been a solid replacement…but having to move Horsey outside and Cox to Center…leaves you with a raw Jager Burton who never started.
Center: Luke Fortner was an elite talent/player. Experienced and knew what to do…Cox was a great guard that now is out of position.
Imagining a world where Rosenthal returned or Steen came in…really makes this line look much different because you could have Horsey play his correct position or even get Flax off…having to work in Burton/Flax with their inexperience at the same time…combined with Horsey being out of position…it’s just a bad chain reaction.
I do think it can be better with a transfer or 2, Goodwin improving, and the guys playing this year being better
Reminds me of the secondary last year…they just flat out weren’t experienced and not up to the challenge. We got some more depth and Valentine just got better with another year.
