Should have played zone all game. This team has no enforcer inside and does not have the ability to stay in front of their man. None of them! And Murray is the worst of the bunch on D.

You play off Simmons. His one weakness is outside shooting. He wants defenders to play up on him. Cal should have kept his defender in the paint.

True, Simmons was a non factor in the first half, but when we cut it to four in the second half it seemed that Simmons started taking over. At least the TV announcers would have you bievs that with their commentary.

Just a guess, but I suspect Cal overhyped Simmons to the team. Seems like they were all standing and watching to see what he would do rather than playing with an edge.
We lost almost every 50/50 ball and didn't take the fight to them at all. The role players had their way with us because we didn't focus on them. In hindsight, if not in foresight, we should have let him have his and stopped the rest of them. We will run them out of Rupp though.

I was in awe when he crossed over someone twice and then dunked the ball towards the end of the game. He handles the ball like a 6'2" guard and can go either side, even though he is left handed.

Very impressive.

Davis can guard anyone that WCS can guard . Get real .

Davis had half the lateral quickness as Cauley-Stein and that is generous. Davis was an absolute freak of nature when it came to blocking shots, help defense etc. but could not play the same type of perimeter defense that WCS could. Davis could block the occasional 3 point attempt (and he did in the title game at a key moment), but WCS could too, with the added benefit that he was so quick no one could get around him, and if they somehow did he could STILL block them from behind because he was so long and athletic.

With only 2 scorers starting a zone wouldnt be terrible. It would allow Willis more time, as well as Humphries and Wynyard, probably even Skal. According to Cal Mulder's defense is his issue so a zone could help him get on the floor.

I find it hard to complain on Cal with his record but no doubt he is stubborn when it comes to his defense.

The problem is Simmons gets a friendly whistle. I see one on one plays every game that do not get the calls this kid gets. You can't get close to the guy without it being called a foul. Reminds me of past Duke players. So as a player you back off to the point where he scores pretty easily.

Haven't seen Simmons hurt anyone from the perimeter.

That's an advantage being freaky quick for his size.

He hasn't. I was just disputing the point that Davis can guard anyone WCS could which I for sure disagree with. I watch Willie make Kris Dunn look like a JV player, I doubt Davis could do the same.

OK man , we'll just have to agree to disagree. I guess we just remember Davis differently. Peace brother.

You are right about Davis and WCS, but the difference in the two was that A.D. brought it every game and WCS didn't always do that!

I don't believe you play off Simmons at all. If you do, he has 2 steps to blow by or go around you.
Actually I think Kidd-Gilchrist would have done a great job on him as far as recent UK players.

That's not right. Anytime you defend a guy who likes to drive and create for others you play off of them, especially if they are a weak outside shooter. That's what teams are doing with Briscoe and it's what they did when Rondo was here (they still play him that way in the NBA). Playing off the player gives you time to cutoff the penetration.

I agree with you about MKG. He has the right mentality to guard a guy like Simmons.

The thread title would be more clear if it said:
Only Anthony Davis Can Guard B Simmons One On One

The phrase 'no one not' is confusing. It's a trend that needs to stop.

No one in college basketball can guard Simmons one on one. I'm not sure what relevance AD has as he left UK 4 years ago come this spring.

Terrence Jones and MKG may be a better match ups defensively against Simmons than AD.

My guess is that W.C.S. could have stayed right with Ben. Simmons is really good.

Great offense trumps great defense in basketball, so this same thing could be said for a ton of players.

WCS and MKG could guard him with good results. That said, Simmons was not our main problem that game.
