So hopefully Leary has an outstanding year and then we move on to the next one.

Who do you guys think will be the next guy and how high is his ceiling assuming Coen is his OC ?

I think we'll find om that out this season. Preseason chatter suggested Kaiya Sheron had taken a huge step forward. My money is on him unless the step forward was to the level of a MAC QB.

I think it is a portal qb. I would rather Wade or Sheron develop into that guy. I am gussing it will be someone like Brock Vandagriff from UGA. Never know who all will be there in Dec though.

Doubt that he’s on the current roster.

Portal. Quality will depend on if coen is still here
And this. Guarantee it will be a portal QB. I don’t see any QB’s on our roster ever getting quality snaps here other than Leary.

Where is Leary going? Big fan of his but don’t know what the draft boards look like (genuinely asking)…

It amazes me the constant negativity of people on this board. I just do not understand it. People complaining about the Oline last week. They graded out the highest in a year. By any objective means it still to early to judge Leary. The Defence has not been up to Coach White standard but again it is early yet. I think/hope the D will start playing up to their potential. There are some objective criticism that are fair. TOO SLOW. Wide zone scheme(ETC..) again? Imho you will be able to judge this team much better after Vandy and UF. Keep calm people and enjoy this season that I believe is going to be all right.

Who on this thread is being negative?? It’s decent discussion and multiple folks have said the same thing you said about it’s early and we’ll know more in a few weeks.

Chill brother, goodness

Pretty sure this is his last year eligible..
Only if he wants it to be

He enrolled at NC St in 2019. This is his 5th yr. Like every CFB player who went through the covid yr of 2020, he gets a bonus 6th year.

It might be better for him financially to be UK starting QB in 2024 than a 6th or 7th round NFL drafted (if that). And UK gets to ease Cutter Boley in with someone in front of him his true frosh yr.

Enrolled and redshirted the 2018 season.. That's where i guess im confused as that makes this year his 6th year..

Would be great to get Devin back but he's made it known that he came to play in a pro style offense to prepare for the NFL. Then you could bring Boley along slowly and let him and saunders have a competition.

That's another reason why we need to actually try to beat the teams like Ball State, EKU, and now Akron. Atleast we could get a look and see how Sheron has progressed.

I’m with you on Sheron, I realize he’s sophomore but I’ve heard Coen likes him and he will use his legs if need be. That helps an offense a great deal.

I don’t want him too unless he’s just too damn good. Don’t wanna ruin him early if we don’t have to chance it.
So you used too correctly once, and to correctly once. I hope the kid is "too" good "to" be ignored next year.

Everyone that has watched him in person or the games online have said he has a long ways to go. I would say the chanve of him starting are very slim

Verdict is still out.....

If Leary ends up with a monster year and goes high in the NFL draft, then I expect UK will work the portal again to get a proven QB to come in for a year.

If Coen fails to deliver on Leary, then UK will most likely be unable to lure a top flight portal QB to UK....and the QB will be Sheron or Wade.

This would be the ideal plan, but if Leary has a decent season and declares for the draft, I can't blame him. yeah he may be a late rounder, but how'd that work out for "Mr. Irrelevant" Brock Purdy. or say...Tom Brady? Leary has had his share of injuries, if he makes it through this season healthy, he should probably consider it unless he can rake in some serious NIL money and take out a huge insurance policy.

It don't matter what numbers he puts up in 2023 Leary is never going to be drafted above 5rh or 6th because of

Injury history
Height
40 time
Arm strength

I doubt Leary will come back in 2024. Maybe he will. I can't see into the future. But I doubt he does, because he made this move to Lexington to work for a year with Coen and then take his shot at pro ball. He might not succeed in pro ball. He might not even get drafted, but that is a different issue. Kentucky fans know players will go early with uncertain draft chances. If Leary does get drafted, the round does not matter if he has strong ambition to make an NFL team. Tom Brady was a late round draft choice. Tony Romo was an undrafted FA. They were exceptions, but they were not the only examples. Brock Purdy. If a quarterback with ambition and work habits can make a roster, he is an injury away from getting his chance.

I am not yet a believer in Sheron or Destin Wade. That does not mean they cannot do it. It only means they have not proven themselves. They haven't had much of a chance. I do not like Sheron's slow-twitch features or Destin's poor accuracy. Of the two, Destin has the better chance because he is younger and more athletic. But I can't see either getting the 2024 starting job. And Boley is 20 pounds too light and a year or two of program experience too green.

That leaves the portal. We need Coen to be successful this year so he becomes a magnet.

No he enrolled in 2018. This season is his sixth college year.

He was probably already at that level last year. The question is whether he is a true SEC caliber quarterback.

Need to see some snaps from Sheron this year if he's the next guy. Surprising because when I saw him play last year I didn't see a guy that would ever play meaningful minutes here. I tend to think he'll be recruited over via the portal.

This looks like a really good QB class.
- Caleb Williams USC
- Drake Maye UNC
- Quinn Ewers Texas (I see a lack of arm strength holding him back)
- Michael Penix Washington
- Shaddeur Sanders looks very impressive if he wants to go out

Then you'll have guys like Riley Leonard at Duke, Bo Nix (who think sucks), JJ McCarthy Michigan, etc...that could get into draft picks. I don't see Leary as getting drafted to be honest. So maybe he comes back.

I was under the impression when Leary transferred to UK, this was his last year he would be eligible.

I would absolutely take him back for next year, if he was eligible.

Honest question, assuming Leary makes it through the season without getting hurt how much weight does his previous injury hold in his draft position knowing he made it through a season in the SEC?

The 2022 injury will be listed and discussed in all of his NFL predraft evaluations. But if he gets through the 2023 season healthy, it will not be a huge factor for most NFL teams.

He's not. Unless, God forbid, he has a season ending injury this year soon and then gets a medical redshirt for 2024. He entered in 2018, took a redshirt year then, and played in all five years since. The only reason he is able to play this year is because 2020 is a "free year".

Coen could be here 10 or 20 years, most as a HC. OR he could be gone next year, or sooner.

None of us are guaranteed to be alive a month from now.

Of course anything can happen. We are dealing with likely outcomes, and the likely outcome is coen is gone in a few years.

Now one thing that might absolutely alter my initial opinion is the (almost surely) anxiety attack he had. For his own mental health, he might not look at moving onward and upward like he was before. The family atmosphere at UK might make that difference.

We'll see. He really had some wicked stuff for Florida and he's a beast recruiting so we all hope we get him long as we can

The revolving door of QBs via portal is great if you hit, but those guys are few far between.

Sheron has to get a shot. He's been in the program, he knows the playbook, he's comfortable with the staff and players. In the absence of transcendent talent, you have to error on the side of those things.

Continuing to require half a season to get a new QB acclimated isn't sustainable.

We're lucky our OOC was pitiful and first two conference games were Vandy and a temporarily down Florida.

I think we play Ohio next season...they're a good football team and we can't count on the SEC schedule starting off easy nor a running back having an all-time SEC type of performance. Training wheels with a new QB next year is risky.
