NEWSSTAND (6/23): What they're saying in Sacramento, Charlotte & Miami

I really didn't want to see our players go to teams like Sacramento or New York.. WHen Monk was going to get drafted by the Knicks I was like "You have to be kidding me".. thank God that franchise can't get out of their own way..

Surprisingly, the Kings had a really good draft night. It'll be interesting to see if they can get out of their own way over the next 3 years and make a few moves forward.

I doubt it. They're a dump until I see otherwise. I'd rather see no Kentucky guys go to teams like Brooklyn, Knicks, Sac-town.. bad owners, crap franchises.

I don't particularly like Charlotte either, but it's nice to have MKG and Monk to root for on the same team.

May have to make the 2+ hour drive to Charlotte next winter to watch the Suns (Ulis, Booker, Bledsoe, Knight) or the Kings (Willie, Fox, & that other guy) go against Bam & MKG.

Charlotte really upgraded their team in the last week with Monk and Dwight Howard. Kimba Walker and Nick Batum were the only real scorers on that team. Now they have good players at all positions.

One would think that Sac would begin to show some improvement in the next couple of years

How many can be on an NBA roster? I thought it was 15, but I just checked Kings roster with the draftees updated, and there are 18. SEVEN shooting guards and FOUR point guards. Surely, somebody's getting cut.

I get the sense that the NBA might be moving towards having 2 super teams (for now), but more great to elite teams right behind them, after this draft.. with dumpster fire organizations, several of them now, mulling around 10-15 wins.

Boston and Minnesota just put the league on notice. Philly and LA are right behind (assuming LA makes some moves soon).. You know San Antonio is going to contend and grab someone in free-agency. I wouldn't count out Morey continuing to make Houston a threat.

You could have a good mix of teams for quite some years. Which is the most ideal scenario in my opinion. Let 10 teams be great.. even if it means you have 5-6 putrid franchises. Unfortunately, that will suck for some of our guys.. which is why I was hoping Fox to the Suns and Monk to to a better team..

Hey, I hope Sacramento turns it around.. But they've had talent before and couldn't do anything with it.I'm not sure Fox and the rest of their haul will fix that.

Rudy Gay turned down his $13 million player option two weeks ago so that he could become a free agent this summer. So you can count him out with the KIngs.

Also, just because a draft haul includes good players, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good draft. Frank Mason, maybe he was best available (and they'll try to shop him).. but he's backup at best for the Kings. I don't think you can have him and Fox on the floor at the same time.. neither can move to the #2.

More importantly, I don't think Mason has a chance in this league to begin with..

Giles is anybodies guess. We'll have to see how that pans out.

Monk will be a star in 2 or 3 years. He is special and if he were 6"5 and long, he would have been top 3.

The Kings have 5 unrestricted free agents and some will not be back.

Roster sizes are increased to 17. There can be up to 15 regular NBA contract players on the roster (minimum 12), and up to a maximum of two (2) Two-Way Players

This does not change the standard D-League assignment rules. Teams can still assign players on regular NBA contracts to the D-League for development.

A two-way player is primarily a D-League player but can be called up by the parent NBA team on temporary assignments.

Teams can sign players with three years or less NBA experience to two-way contracts.

Teams can sign players to one year or two year "two-way" contracts.

Two-way contracts must be signed prior to January 15th.

Just as with regular NBA contracts, the parent team retains full rights to its two-way players. (they cannot be poached by other teams).

Two-Way players make more ($75,000) than regular D-League players. (Level A players make $26,000 while Level B players make $19,500)

Here is how the Kings website shows their roster.

That "More Reactions" link with the Miami Herald about Bam really irked me for some reason...

“Nice player; not a great player,” an Eastern Conference scout said. “Not as athletic as people think. Didn’t rebound at the level I thought he was capable of. Good kid that plays hard. A good big off the bench.”

"Not as athletic as people think". What is that supposed to mean? Do people think he's doing 360 between the legs jams from the 3-point line? For his size, he's an athletic freak. I agree about the rebounding part though.
