New Strength and Conditioning

Boom looks huge and Elam looks small (I mean comparatively, at least). That has to account for something.

We have got some fine strength and conditioning people in the UK football program right now. I'm not sure what Korem was trying to do here, but whatever the case, it appeared to be ineffective, at least at the college level. The recent photos of these guys I've been seeing show me we have players that look like SEC players. It appears "bigger, stronger, faster" is now a mantra with a basis in reality, not just in theory. Nowhere will these improvements be more apparent than in the trenches. We may start to see some pretty good line play this season.

Elam drops 30 pounds and looks ready to munch on some RB and QBs. Something seems to have improved in the strength and conditioning program after the departure of Korem and the addition of our two new guys.

Those are 2 good examples of the different look we seem to have, there are probably others that may show up as we get more info going forward.

The addition of the former Indiana strength coach, along with the current conditioning staff, really seems to have paid off !

Dont mention "munch" in connection with Elam. Even if it's only on the internet.

Elam weighing 350 doesn't bother me. Losing 30 pounds of fat does not make someone transform like that, imo. I think he's lost much (much) more of that in fat and gained quite a bit in muscle for a net loss of 30. Pretty impressive considering how much bad weight he had.

Time will tell. I'm excited to hear practice reports.

Elam is 350 lbs and looks strong.
If he is now 350# and has lost 30# he was obviously more than last year's/this spring advertised 360#. Anyway, absolutely "the best" Elam has looked since arriving on campus.

Have there been any weigh room "reports"? The focus has always been on his weight but I'm curious about how much this kid can bench or squat. There are some guys that have a certain "natural strength" and can throw up some pretty big numbers without a lot weight training.

Peace

He noted yesterday in an interview he was actually at about 375 or 380, which is where people are getting the 30 pound drop (as he's legitimately 350 pounds now, albeit it's a very impressive 350 pounds, seems rare for people to carry that kind of weight that well).
As for his bench and squat, the last reported numbers are from a year ago (August 16th, 2015). He's very clearly gained a lot of muscle (even between this spring, and now), and lost a ton of fat.
Those numbers previously reported from a year ago were that he did a 3-rep-max in the high 600s, almost 700 on the squat, and benching nearly 500.

That's impressive. Thanks

Peace

Notta problem, man.

As it pertains to Marc Hill and the new S&C staff, they've seemingly done more good in about 2 months than Korem could do in 3 years.
I'm very pleased with Elam's transformation, and more importantly, Matt seems committed to start the season not at 350 (a very surprisingly slender 350, I may add), but 335.
With the way that he's carrying the weight right now (looks like a fairly slender defensive tackle, and not a bulbous nose tackle), him getting down to 335 could have him looking exactly like the occasional freakish Alabama linemen that weight 330 pounds and look every bit of a slim 300.
With his strength and athleticism (and he is pretty athletic considering his size), he could be a real force for our defensive front 7 at that weight.

Korem was not the S&C Coach, he was in charge of the High Performance Program. The S&C Coach before Mark Hill took the job was Ray Oliver.

I think people are more bought in to the guys there now. For whatever reason the team didn't like korem. We had a bunchof guys stay all summer and guys like love held them accountable.

Plus we have more 2 s&c coaches with differing specialties. Korem was a speed guy by training. We got more of an old school power guy for the linemen now.

The Higher Performance Program run by Korem had practically nothing to do with body building and weight training, that was under the auspice of the S&C coach. The High Performance Program, (which by the way we still have it's just not as comprehensive as it use to be), involves monitoring, charting and advising players on their practice plans, their mental state, sleep patterns, food intake, etc. They also used high tech equipment to monitor all the players vitals so they can make sure a players was not pushed too far in practices or workouts. The objective were not to "build" players or changer their bodies - that's the S&C staff, but rather to make sure the players were optimizing their ability.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but Im not sure Stoops nor anyone else was disappointed in Korem or his program they just had to scale it back and let Korem go to make budget room for the Asst Coaches pay increase. In order to make the hires they wanted to make and give raises where they seen fit they had to do some shuffling. They probably could have afforded both Korem and new assistants/raises but it would have required yet another round of price adjustments and I don't think it made good business sense being they're doin what they can to keep butts in seats as is and are being cautious not to loose too many. And I think Korem was brought here under the understanding that he was gonna spend a few years implementing his system then go back to more professional training and make himself available for private hire.

^First I heard it had anything to do with budgeting. The rumor I heard was that Erik was requiring things of the players, many thought unnecessary in order to support a PHd thesis - I have no idea if there is any substance to that however.

+1 Seems kinda hard to believe it was budget constraints since we have given everybody raises and hired on several more guys in the department since then. Several posters on here that has contact with the players all said none of them liked Korem or what he was doing. Like he was their experiment. Only a couple of guys said they liked it.

I don't "hear" anything; I only know what I read here and elsewhere. However, UK has plenty of money to have retained this program had they wished. From the get go it appeared Korem's emphasis was on on "record and monitor" vis a vis "develop". And that sounds very much like an academic pursuit. Color me as someone who was unsure about this initiative from the start. IIRC, he came with Stoops from FSU. I wonder if FSU still embraces this "high performance" regimine? All JMO.

Peace
