with the big announcement of UK going to get a new Baseball stadium, I was just thinking what will the stadium be named ? I cannot think of what a fitting name for it would be, but I do have a name for the field.
I believe the field should be named for former long time coach Keith Madison. He is by far the longest tenured coach in UK history, some 25 seasons, and he did win over 700 games while there. Now I know that he only went to 2 NCAA tournaments, but had there been 64 teams invited, instead of 48, like there was during most of his tenure, he would have had 5 or 6 invites.
He also came closer to getting us to the CWS than any other coac has. In 1988 we were literally inches from beating Stanford and getting to Omaha, only to lose to the eventual NC Cardinal.
He continues to be involved in the program, thru announcing and being at every home game, so while I don't have any inkling about the stadium name, I do believe the Cats should play their home games on Keith Madison field !

I don't have an issue with that. Giving the resources he was, he done a lot for this program and he's a great guy.

But let's have a little fun here. Pretend Mitch calls and asks for your input on the new stadium. What are some things you would like to see? Basically, how would you design the stadium, what amenities would you include and what would you make the playing surface.

Something retro, maybe not a symetric park deminsion wise. Of course there needs to be the suites for the big boosters, and a flashy electronic scoreboard. Also maybe some Colorado Blue spruce trees beyond the outfield fences. Also a picnic play area for the fans and kiddos.

Did I fall asleep???:sunglasses:...A new stadium has announced?...I missed it...Where?

Lots of limestone and brick to make it beautiful. Something to make it stand out. Whether that be strange (or somewhat strange) field dimensions, or an excellent and beautiful walk up entrance. Would be great to be like Liberty's field with the firepits that add to the fan experience as well add to the aesthetics. I don't know that we could find a great location, but we could try to make something that is unique and all our own. You could adapt a horse farm feel to the exterior or the inside of the stadium. I don't know... I think there are a lot of options, and I just want to see our stadium stand out.

As far as naming... that is a very tough one. It wouldn't surprise me to see it have a donor's name or something that isn't extremely significant to the baseball program. I like the name Cliff Hagan Stadium. I like calling it "The Cliff," but I don't know that Hagan is overly deserving of the honor. I think it would be good to just start with something like Keith Madison Field at Wildcat Park or something like that.

Our athletic facilities names are truly bizzare.....ie. C M Newton field, C M didn't play football at UK, but he did play baseball, Cliff Hagan Stadium, Hagan did not play baseball, Harry Lancaster aquatic center, Lancaster was a Basketball and Baseball coach at UK, had nothing to do with the swimming program.
I realize all 3 gentlemen were Athletic directors at one time, and this is where the venues got their names, but it is still very strange !!

I would like to see unique dimensions as well. I think something unique along the outfield wall would be nice. Maybe something along what Great American ball park has with the scoreboard or something along those lines. I really think the entrance/outside area needs to be pop. I like the outside of James Patterson Stadium but make it unique to UK. Id like to see a berm area for families or maybe an area like what Liberty has with the firepits and such. And I would really like to see the Cliff remain but make it larger. I think its a cool view watching the game from the outfield on the deck. Im not a huge fan of luxury boxes, mainly because I dont get to use them, but I think there is a place for them but have a couple that the average joe could buy for a game or two.

As for playing surface, Im torn. Playing on dirt and grass should be the right choice, but I do know with the weather that we have in March and April, turf would be great as well. A new scoreboard and sound system should be on the top of the main priority list.
