The new ribbon lighting around the second tier of the Rupp Arena bowl is looking good. It's a nice looking upgrade, although I'm sure it will eventually be used primarily for ads. Sometimes I think Barnhart's ultimate fantasy is to have Rupp covered in ads like a NASCAR.

How about this?

I think Bertha is being replaced after this season. I believe I read that Rupp will be getting a new center hung video board to replace Bertha right after this season.

Didn't they say that they didn't do it in the past because it would be to heavy for the roof or something like that? If true, then they would have to reinforce the roof first. I just can't imagine a scoreboard with video screens would be that much heavier than that monstrosity hanging there now. Speakers tend to be pretty heavy for their size. At least good ones with large magnets.

I just did a search and boy was I wrong. I believe Big Bertha weighs 12,000 lbs. Depending on how much they are investing in it, I've seen a couple NBA ones that were pretty expensive. The one in Utah is like $15 million and weighs 55,000 lbs. The one in Indiana is $16 million and 40,000 lbs. I guess the weight could be an issue.

All I could find on it is that they approved the project for $15 million dollars, but that also includes HD screens for the corners, new video production equipment, new screen for courtside scorer's table, improved wifi, new video screen in the lobby, new LED signs on the outside of the building, improved steel roof supports to attract more concerts and other productions that require heavier equipment to be hung (probably for the video scoreboard as well), all the red supports and ducts cleaned and painted, and the sports lightning will be replaced with LED fixtures.

That is quite a bit to share $15 million. I am guessing it won't be as state of the art as those other places I mentioned, but anything will be an improvement over what we currently have.

I thought Bertha was going to be down and replaced all ready. That's too bad. I don't care how much it cost, the video screen would be worth every penny.

Agreed. there was not enough support from UK and community so the mayor let it go. If the plan, which was awesome in my opinion, ever gets revived, this would be a waste of money.
