New Beatles Song

Surprised I hadn't seen a thread on this considering all the old people on this board...

A brand new Beatles song was released today and it'll most likely be the last song all four of them have played on. In 1994 Yoko Ono gave the remaining three a demo from Lennon and they tried to finish the song then but the technology wasn’t there yet to make it sound any good and then in 2001 when Harrison died they basically gave up. But when Peter Jackson was doing the documentary he was able to separate out Lennon’s voice and make it sound crystal clear so they took everything from the ‘90s, added in Lennon’s voice, tidied it up a bit, and the two remaining finished it.

That song is absolute dogshit. Just like any of those post death mashups with Biggie or Tupac. When the song was not actually collaborated on and basically just stitched together things that were never supposed to be together, it never sounds good.

I've said this before but Mark David Chapman should have killed Yoko instead of John. Neither should have been shot but if he just had to be famous he could have done the world a favor.

While their later stuff is almost certainly more 'celebrated' by music critics, I find myself wondering whether the experimentation on a lot of that stuff disguises songs that aren't all that good at their core. Heresy, I know. But, I find Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery, et al to be more a product of 'let's see what this does/sounds like' vs. 'how do we make this song better'. To be transparent, I've never had the Beatles as one of my top 10 bands that I listen to. I respect their talent and their impact on pop music (notice I say 'pop', i.e., popular, not necessarily 'rock'). But, just not my cup of tea in most cases.

Rogue, in reference to your last sentence, do you feel the same way about modern 'music' that samples disparate parts of older songs and mixes them into what some would refer to as 'new music'? Just curious. IMO, those that sample are revealing their lack of musical talent, but that's just me.

No I’m fine with samples, basically 50%+ of rap and R&B sample something it seems. I don’t like when you take this dead persons music and put a voice and lyrics to it that he never intended to be with the song. You can tell it was thrown together for likely one last money grab.

Yoko doesn't live at the Dakota anymore. She has moved to her farm in Franklin, NY. As for the song -- meh. Would John have even included the finished product in an album? Although I do recognize that Peter Jackson's technology is really remarkable. It will be interesting to see how it is employed in future projects.
