Not a good idea, imo, from a special teams aspect. Somebody needs to be directly responsible for that unit.

Quiet a few teams go without. Richt at UGA has never had one I don't believe but I'll let Grumpy field it more accurately.

Yes, UGA does that, never had a designated special teams coach, at least since Richt has been there.

Seems almost logical to me to involve the entire staff in special teams coaching. You still have a variety of position groups in special teams play.

The one thing I've never understood is who provides kicking instruction, especially in this circumstance? Consultants? Do they video the kickers and send it out for analysis and feedback? It seems that is very possible, but just not often discussed. This might be a "gray area" where the coach count is concerned, since it might be school financed, unlike QB's seeking out their own gurus.

Anyone know for certain?

My understanding or at least what I read somewhere is that Buh will be responsible for kick-off and punters. But the overall coverage team and returners would be a group effort.

How do you think that has worked out for Georgia, do you think it is a good idea?

Of course you also have to figure in the disparity in talent.

Coaching the kicker AND punter is another question, seems like you would want a specialist there. Fortunately we seem to have a very well coached player at each position currently.

I can't speak for a fact about the kickers, but most of the ones kicking in the SEC grew up having a private kicking coach, lets face it not many American football coaches are experts on how to kick the ball. I am sure they stay in contact or know how to get in contact with them if they need a little help alone the way and is most likely funded by some petty cash fund in the athletic department, or some sideline passes. Be good for the kicking coach's resume to be able to say I coached U of X's kicker.

UK needs to add Doug Pelphrey as kicking consultant. I know he is already doing that for players in Northern KY. He is a prior UK and NFL kicker. He understands the mechanics of kicking very well.

Why wait til after signing day to announce it?? He should have been able to help recruit in the very least..west coast guy who know,we might have picked up a good player.ala johnson/Matthews.
