Myth Busters: UK is 30-0 because it's schedule is weak

I put this argument into context using three of the more popular computer models available: RPI, BPI, Sagarin. Below shows how UK has performed (its record) against those teams rated at the top of each service. I also show these numbers relative to Virgina, Duke, Kansas, UL, Wisconsin

sos.png

#2 most wins agains RPI top 25 (5 wins)
#1 most wins agains RPI top 50 (11 wins)
#3 most wins against SAGARIN top 25 (5 wins)
#1 most wins agains SAGARIN top 50 (12 wins)
#1 most wins against BPI top 50 (14 wins)
#1 most wins against BPI top 100 (20 wins)

The team with the fewest wins in nearly all major categories is UL

The SOS numbers are a bit down relative to the others. This can only be explained by weaker competition against teams ranked 100+. Its certainly not due to the quantity/quality of competition at the top.

That thing has flaws all over it.

According to RPI top 100, Kansas has played 50 games so far, and Duke 36
According to BPI top 100, Kansas has played 40 games so far, and Duke 34

and on and on……

no wonder they're so close to us in all time wins, playing that many games.

You are probably right, but its not like this was that hard... it took 15 minutes to construct.

My numbers are correct, you are reading it wrong. I did the work to make the numbers cumulative.

Kansas has played 25 games against the RPI top 100, Duke has played 21... as the chart says

I started this exact topic yesterday with our records vs top 50 in RPI, BPI and Kenpom.

It's amazing the amount of stupidity across the country of people that think we haven't beaten anyone.

OK

Guess I'm adding wrong.

You have RPI 1-50 record for Kansas at 11-5
You have RPI 51-100 record for Kansas at 25-9

16+34=50 …… last time I checked.

You do not add them together... I have already included 1-50 record in the 1-100 record.

Pretty basic reading comprehension.

Edit: Ah the BPI number says 51-100 Ill change that, still your response is pretty smartass!

By my count, Kansas RPI 1-50 record is 11-5 and their RPI 51-100 record is 7-1 for a total of 24 games.

Done... now do you want to comment on the actual content of the chart? Or just nitpick?

Sorry no. The Big 12 is KU , who we beat , and a bunch of teams of the Arkansas, UGA and LSU level. that is all. Only Duke or UVA would give us a decent game outta the ACC. The SEC is the 3rd best conference , 4th if you think the big east is better. So no. wrong .

Guess we could correct the RPI from 51-100 to 1-100

HAHA

No offense, it just didn't add up originally. Good work!!!

It's the only thing some people have to hang their hat on is that we've supposedly played nobody. The better they are the better we play, that's what sucks for them.

Needs another correction. Wisconsin can't be 8-0 in that third line.

I am willing to bet that Wichita St last year did not stack up nearly as well as Ky's competition this year.

2014 Wichita was 3-0 against the top 50, 10-0 against top 100 RPI. They dd not play a top 25 team in the regular season.

Good job on the chart. 'Schedule-toughness' all subjective BS and fodder for the sports talking heads. ACC is tough, Big 12 is great, SEC sucks, blah, blah, blah. 30-0 is 30-0, you play who you play and if you win them all, you win them all.

A better argument is a qualitative one - we don't really play in any hostile environments in conference. I'm not that impressed by the SEC, but I don't think any other conference but the ACC is much better. If you had Duke twice, USA twice, and at ND, that would be an impressive 5-0, and you might have to play 2 of those 3 again in the conference tournament.

The only real weakness I see in UK's schedule is one that occurs almost every year in the conferences with lots of teams. Look at UK's SEC schedule this year and the current standings. Georgia is the only team in the top half we had to play twice. Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and Missouri are all in the bottom half. And the only game with Arkansas, the league's 2nd best team, was in Lexington. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe it would have mattered, but it did play out better this year for UK than last. In the end it's all just talk. We're 30-0, and soon to be 31-0 with an undefeated regular season under our belts. All this team could do was win the games they had scheduled, and that's what they did.
