My 2016/2017 hopeful roster

G- Fox 6'3 / Simmons 6'5 / Hawkins 6'0
G- Monk 6'4 / Matthews 6'6 / Mulder 6'4
G/F- Gabriel 6'10 / Willis 6'9
F- Adebayo- 6'10 / Wynyard- 6'9
C- Humphries 7'0 / Killeya Jones- 6'10

This is what I would love to see our 2016/2017 roster look like next year. Not quite sure I see the room for Bolden in the line-up. I know people will say if he is as good as he is ranked then we will find a place for him but I feel like the buzz on him is he is gifted offensively but lacks on the rebounding/defensive part of the game. I'd much rather get Simmons to come in and be the first guy off the bench for the 1-3 positions. We will have 2 deep in the 4/5 positions with the option to slide Gabriel into the 4 if necessary. This to me is a very athletic, long, fun team. Don't know enough about Fox, Gabriel, or Simmons and their outside shooting so that could be our only shaky spot but this team will be fun to watch. Of course this is after we watch our team this year who I still think will be a great one by years end. Enjoy these years folks as these are the Golden ages of our time for UK basketball. Not saying we wont be a great team once Cal leaves but man this recruiting success year in and year out wont ever be match at least for a long time. Go Cats!!

I can't believe the class we have already after the fall signing period. It's such a weight off the chest as opposed to last year. And to think we could potentially still add Simmons, Allen, or Bolden is insane. I'm fine if we add nobody else but if one of those guys don't mind coming off the bench and having a chance to start the next year, I'm cool with that too.

It's a pretty big relief knowing we have that monster class already signed for next year. That could be the best team that Cal has ever had.

Fixed it for you

We have everybody besides Kobi Simmons right now. I think Kobi would get PT over Hawk and Mulder but not Fox, Monk or a soph Matthews. Signing Kobi would be adding sprinkles on top of the iceing.

I think it will be...
Ulis
Monk
Gabriel
Bam
Humphries

Fox
Matthews
SKJ
Wynard
Willis
Hawkins
Floreal
Another newcomer: Bolden, Simmons, grad transfer, JUCO, overseas, reclassified player...

Skal and Murray are definitely gone. 0 chance they fall out of first round and very slim chance they fall out of lottery. Poythress is definitely gone because he's a senior. The way Briscoe is playing I don't see him falling out of first round. The only players that may come back are Ulis and Lee and it will all depend on if they can get a team to gaurentee a first round draft pick. NBADraft.net has Lee going 49th and Ulis undrafted. Draft express has Ulis going 42nd and Lee going 44th.

I think Ulis is gone unfortunantly. He has about hit his ceiling in college and won't grow any so while the draft is a weak one he will jump and take his second round pick and run with it. I think Simmons would be the best fit for nexts years team. After next years team we lose quite a bit in terms of scholarships. Fox, Monk, Gabriel, Bam, Willis, Hawkins, Mulder, and Floreal. Having a base for 2017 of Simmons, Matthews, SKJ, Humphries, and Wynyard would be nice for whatever haul Coach Cal brings in with that recruiting class. If you haven't noticed he is recruiting pretty hard on the guards/wings in that class.

^Ulis might leave after this year, but I disagree that he's about hit his ceiling in college. His draft stock will probably never rise to lottery pick level, that's true, but I think that there's certainly room for him to improve as a player, particularly with his outside shot. He's going to need to improve that if he wants a fair chance at the NBA level with his size. There are guards a lot less talented than Ulis that are showing they can still develop as juniors and seniors with constant work on their games and experience.

If we don't make at least a deep run this year and his draft prospects aren't looking great, I wouldn't put it past him to return for a chance to play with another legendary group of talent ala his freshman year here, and a chance to go out on top.

If you aren't going to be picked in the first round you have no business leaving for the draft unless your family REALLY needs the money. Both Andrew and Dakari had full rides this year and next year. That's worth just in two years about 40,000 dollars each. Not to mention once they have a degree their job prospects to making $50,000 a year + skyrocket. Instead they get drafted in the second round and don't make the team. So they are only making 20,000-25,000 dollars a year. Say Johnson gets hurt(hopefully it doesn't happen) and he never plays in an NBA game and his career is over. Now he has to use that 40-50k to go back to school if he hasn't already spent that money. Andrew is more lucky because his undrafted twin brother actually made a roster and is making 500,000 so if Andrew were to get hurt Aaron could pay for his Andrews tuition. I understand people say well their draft stock was as high as it was going to be, but guess what that doesn't really matter if you aren't getting gaurenteed money. You minus well finish school then get drafted second round. That way if things don't pan out you aren't losing $40,000 worth of tuition and you'll have something to fall back on. Not to mention you only get one chance to experience college and playing for a college team. How many former Cal players that actually made it said they wished they would have stayed and missed UK?

Would it be feasible for Cal to start Ulis, Fox, and Monk all at the same time? Similar to what he's doing this year with Ulis, Briscoe, and Murray....

And then have Gabriel at the 4, and Bam at the 5?

jrpross I agree with you most of the time. I like your positional breakdowns. I could see a guard added but I think the ship has sailed on another big. Allen and Bolden treading water, they had their chance. Simmons because he really wanted to play here, throw him the life jacket!

Well thank you sir. :) I wouldn't think they'd add another big guy either. But for some reason Evan Daniels said within the last couple days that he still thinks Kentucky leads for Marquis Bolden. I don't know nothin bout that. But apparently he and some others still think it's a possibility. So who knows?

You're assuming they wanna be in school in the first place. Most of these guys never would have come if the rule wasn't in place.

If they come back to UK they don't have to pay for tuition.

2 things. I don't want to see Humphries starting next year and I think we have to add a shooter. I do think Humphries is gonna be a good player and I think he'll be drafted but he needs to be coming off the bench. I want a big long, skilled athletic big starting next to Bam. I'm talking about a AD, Noel, WCS, KAT type. Not a big slow kid. Again. Humphries is gonna be great, but he should be coming off the bench. And we can add a shooter through a senior transfer who'll be eligible immediately. On that team we need a pure 3pt shooter coming off the bench. A guy who can shoot 40plus%. A Bryn Forbes type off the bench is what I'm talking about. A knockdown, dead eye 3pt shooter. And SKJ is WAY better than some of y'all are thinking. By the time the final rankings come out he'll be a borderline top 10 player. Maybe like 12th or so. So he may be starting day 1. He's a big long and skilled athletic big.

D'aAron Fox
Malik Monk
Wenyen Gabriel
Bam Adebayo
Sacha Killeya Jones

Mathews
Humphries
A SG Transfer or reclassification. (Shooter)
Wynyard
Willis
Mulder
Hawkins

I think the team is going to look like this next season:

G Fox/Hawkins
G Monk/Matthews
F Gabriel/Willis
F Adebayo/Wynyard
F Killeya-Jones/Humphries

I think Mulder ends up transferring if he doesn't start getting some clock this season.

I doubt very seriously that Cal will add a JUCO, grad transfer, or overseas on next years team. Don't see that happening with all the talent we will have. We usually see Cal do something like that when we need a certain skill set void filled and we just won't have that glaring void next year. Some may say 3 pt shooting but I wouldn't agree, I think Monk, Gabriel, Fox, Mulder, and Willis will hold that skill set down nicely.

I don't understand the problem? I think the roster is basically set right now for next year. Lets say ALL the good players go pro in Poy, Lee, Ulis, Skal, Murray and Briscoe. That still leaves 9 returness and 5 newcomers for a total of 14 players just like we have this year, 15 when we get Wynyard.

- Depth at every position
Hawk can play PG/SG
Mulder can play SG/SF
Willis can play SF/PF
Matthews can play SG/SF
Wynyard can play PF/C
Humphries can play PF/C
Fox can play PG/SG
Monk can play PG/SG
Gabriel can play SF/PF
SKJ can play PF/C
BAM can play PF/C

- Well have experience in 3 seniors and 3 sophs

- Well have length at every position
Backcourt goes 6-0, 6-4, 6-6, 6-4, 6-4 Frontcourt goes 6-9, 6-10, 7-0, 6-10, 6-11, 6-10.

Next year, the 8-man rotation will be (IMHO):

Fox (1)
Monk (1/2)
Matthews (2/3)
Gabriel (3/4)
Willis (3/4)
Killeya-Jones (4/5)
Adebayo (4/5)
Humphries (5)

I know it's early, but at this point it would be a surprise if we don't have more people back than some of you are listing.

Lee is the only one I could see coming back.

If he does come back, I think he replaces SKJ in the rotation. Similar players, with Lee being stronger and more experienced.

Briscoe and Ulis aren't obvious departures. Briscoe could still be a first rounder by the end of the year, so that wouldn't shock me. If Ulis leaves, it's as a second rounder. The only reason to leave would be that he just doesn't want to be here anymore.

I think you're assuming Ulis is gone, which is a big assumption for a player his size and with a lack of NBA athleticism, but what about Skal and Briscoe? Are they not in next year's rotation? To be honest, I don't think Murray is playing well enough right now to be considered a draft pick, but may ride the "potential" train to a one and done college career.

Not trying to flame here, that is my honest opinion. I am impressed with Briscoe's toughness, he's a bulldog. He simply cannot shoot and not sold on his point guard skills. Out of him, Murray and Ulis, however, I think Briscoe may have the better future NBA career. Skal just needs time. If he went the WCS route, I think he'd be a first team AA and go on to have more than a cup of coffee in the NBA.

Cal has pretty much made it known that Ulis plans to leave after this season, regardless of draft position.

Briscoe will leave as well. He came here to be OAD. He will leave regardless of his draft position.

I would love to be wrong on this one.

I don't think you are. He's played better than I actually thought he would. I'm pretty sure he wants to be a one-and-done if he can.

Please jr you don't have to call me Sir! You definitely have the personality of some one I would enjoy meeting sometime in the future . Yes the college guru's Get hung up on a player somewhat attached to a certain school and Evan and friends need to do their jobs so to speak. Glad his decision will be in the spring, right now Skal might be coming back unless he turns the jets on. . You know who really knows. Next years class has the most potential I ever remember for an incoming to UK. Call me anything you like but I don't and haven't deserved Sir yet. Take care my man!

Just curious. If Kentucky loses Poythress, Murray, Briscoe and one of Ulis/Skal do you have enough scholarships available for your incoming class?

Assuming Poythress, Murray, Briscoe leave
1. Fox

6. Mulder
7. Gabriel
8. Willis
9. Adebayo
10. Wynyard
11. Humphries
12. Killeya Jones
13. Open - Would be one of Skal, Lee, Bolden or Simmons

That;s one amazingly loaded class.

It looks to me like there's NBA starter on each of our starting position.

Hey the kid wants to play in the NBA. The chances will be no better after his senior year than they will after his sophomore year that he'll make it. Might as well give it a try now.
Like I said, he just wants to leave.
