Monday NC State pitcher

LOL! Logged on after watching the last out for the very same question. I assume Logue for an inning or two, Hjelle for an inning or two, Salow on the last 1 or 2 innings, and maybe volunteers from the stands in between?

He threw 58 yesterday. I have to imagine that we basically just give everyone one inning and hope that we can maybe stretch one or two pitchers

The question is whether Pop can go. If so they may start him. Get a couple out of him and then try a couple from Logue. Then you may have to rely on some of the unreliable guys.

I'd say it's all hands on deck tomorrow minus Thompson and Schaezner

I'll say Logue starts and they try to get 3 IP out of him. Then it gets tricky.

Logue 3..................
Hjelle 1-2....................
Salow 2-3................
Machamer 1.............
Lewis 1 ....................Unlikely I know
Pop?........................Unlikely as well

Salow threw around 33 pitches. Surely he is good for the last two innings tomorrow. Logue a couple of innings. I bet Hjelle could go two innings. That's six innings. A couple of pitchers have to step up for another 3 innings.

Hjelle - 3
Logue - 3
Salow - 3

Lewis/Thompson/Hjelle in that order versus the dirty birds.

Maybe tomorrow would be Hjelle's bullpen day give him 40-50 pitches get us off to a good start then turn it over to Logue to get as far as he can then let Salow close it.

This is the Cats most important game since Keith Madison's team in the late 80's lost to Stanford twice and lose a chance to go to Omah. Therefore, Mingione has to use everybody to win this game. I look for Logue to start & try to go 4 innings, then try to sneak Schanzer for an inning, from there you have a combination of Machemer, Hjelle, Lewis and Salow over the last 4 innings. I am saving Thompson for Louisville
and the use Hjelle and Lewis for games 2 & 3.

I imagine that there will be some gamesmanship about naming the pitchers. You have to disclose no later than an hour before the game, and I imagine that both coaches will wait the entire time before announcing. I have no idea who Kentucky go with, but I am very hard pressed to believe that NC State doesn't use Piedmonte (sorry, I think I was calling him Pridemore yesterday). He started on Friday against Indiana, but struggled and gave up 3 runs off of 16 pitches before being pulled from the game. He has a .233 ERA and hitters are hitting just .223 against him. He is a 6 foot 8 right handed pitcher.

He started the year as a relief pitcher and then in April went to starting in the midweek. He got two starts against UNCG and UNC Asheville before coming in for relief work against UNC and Boston College. He worked two fairly long outings in those games before the NC State coach decided to make him the Friday starter for the rest of the year. He's thrown 29.1 innings as a Friday starter and given up 9 earned runs (3 of those this past Friday), which I believe gives him a 2.78 ERA as a starter.

He has certainly pitched against some quality teams including UNCG, UNC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Delaware, and Indiana. Against UNCG, which has a .323 batting average as a team, he threw 7 innings and gave up just 2 hits and 1 run in route to a 10-1 win. Against Delaware, who has a .310 batting average he threw 5.2 innings and gave up just 4 hits and 1 run on his way to a 7-1 victory. Against Clemson, who hits .284, he had a fairly short leash but gave up 4 hits in 4 innings, and 2 runs, both of them home runs. He left the game leading 3-2. Against UNC, who hits .283, he went 5 scoreless and gave up 4 hits. So, he has faced some pretty solid hitting teams. So, runs may be at a premium.

What is good for Kentucky is that they've faced two "starters" that were both left-handers and I have to imagine that neither one is going to be available today. Brown and Adler should both be on the shelf after throwing over 100 pitches. That means that the only lefties that they have left are Ferguson (no appearances this year), Beckman (5.09 ERA in 23 innings), Centala (no appearances), and Klyman (2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings - he threw a solid 34 pitches last night and did pretty well). So, we should see a lot of right handed pitching, or we'll see some guys that haven't thrown a whole lot of innings. I imagine we will see a good bit of Beckman if things go sour for Piedmonte though.

First and foremost, our bats have to show up. We can't continue to strand 2-3 men on base. The pitching will be piecemeal as will theirs. I think the deciding factor will be capitalizing on tired/inconsistent pitching.

Unfortunately, I don't think that their pitching will be that piecemeal. I think they'll try to ride their ace if he gives them a good outing. If he doesn't then they have basically their entire bullpen (except Adler and Brown) available to go. However, I will say that I think that the NC State coach will have an extremely short leash and that he'll yank the pitchers at the first sign of trouble and he'll continue to do that until he finds someone that he can stick with for a while.

Mingione said everyone but Thompson available and I believe him. Very possible the starters could've skipped some of their post start conditioning and pens to be ready for a few innings today. Hjelle and Lewis are also long and lean, should be easier to come back early with those arm types.

Gentlemen...for this team it's all about hitting the ball and scoring...was supper impressed with Logue, Schenzer, Thompson over the weekend...my buddy and I have not missed a game(all sessions) and it has been a ball for us...have no clue who will pitch tonight , but hoping for a SRO CROWD. and that the bats are clicking...oh, and if I'm not mistaken they have their ace to pitch tonight?

They should have their ace. I don't know of any reason they wouldn't use him, unless they are going to try to pull another lefty out of their hat. I imagine they will throw the ace and give him a short leash. If he gives up 2-3 runs early then they will hand the ball to someone else.

I think you are right, hitting is definitely the key. I don't know that we have the pitching available to really get into a pitcher's dual. I think we need to jump on them early and put the pressure on them and on their bullpen. Build our confidence in doing so.

By the way... are we home or away tonight? When do they decide that? UKathletics site seems to have UK as the home team on their schedule page, but that might just be temporary.

Believe we are the away team from what I've read, but not sure when that decision was made officially.

We agree. That doesn't mean Hjelle or anyone can't pitch several innings with 3 days rest.

He pitched over 100 pitches. There's a reason you don't see it happen. I can see one inning but I just don't feel he should be pitch more than 1. Like i say only 1 inning if other options get into trouble.

How's he on 3 day rest: Pitched Friday: Rest Saturday, Rest Sunday; Possible pitch Monday.

That's just my opinion.

NCAA scoreboard and ESPN both have us as away but they both had that immediately following last nights game.

I've never been to a UK home game, and would like to take my boys tonight. I know there won't be any reserved seats left - maybe not seats of any kind left. For those of you who go to games, is it hopeless? Any hillside seating or anything like that?

Should still be able to buy general admission seating for outfield deck. Move fast!

You see it in tourney time/playoffs...Bumgarner/Kershaw etc and they are prepared for full outings.

These pitchers throw pens, lift weights, long toss in between starts...if that workload was cut down, it wouldn't be unreasonable to see 40-50 pitches from some of these 2-3 day rest guys. And the pitcher himself is going to make the call about how he feels and if he is available.

I looked those two up specifically because I was unsure.

Kershaw pitched 7 pitches (2 outs on a 2 day rest) but that's it.
Other than that I saw no scenario to this one where those pitchers threw.

I agree with you though, it's up to the pitcher himself but in the moment it's also up to the coaches to help make the responsible decision. I do think he can pitch but in no way can I see him being effective for 40 pitches. I'd love to be wrong though.

Bumgarner pitched 7 innings in game 1, complete game 5 (117 pitches) and then saved game 7 (5 innings/68 pitches) in the world series. He skipped basically all non game action in between starts to save his body as you can see below.

After starting against St. Louis in the finale of the National League Championship Series — for which he was also named M.V.P. — Bumgarner threw only a light bullpen session before Game 1 of the World Series. After winning that game, and allowing just one run, he did not throw in the bullpen before Game 5. He also rested between Games 5 and 7.

Obviously we would have games after, so can quite empty the tank like he did...but 3 days rest does have a large sample size...the stats aren't always great, so its a gamble.

Even if you go to the game tonight, you still will not have been to a UK home game,
according to the posts prior yours.
Looks like we will be the "visitors".
