I imagine that there will be some gamesmanship about naming the pitchers. You have to disclose no later than an hour before the game, and I imagine that both coaches will wait the entire time before announcing. I have no idea who Kentucky go with, but I am very hard pressed to believe that NC State doesn't use Piedmonte (sorry, I think I was calling him Pridemore yesterday). He started on Friday against Indiana, but struggled and gave up 3 runs off of 16 pitches before being pulled from the game. He has a .233 ERA and hitters are hitting just .223 against him. He is a 6 foot 8 right handed pitcher.
He started the year as a relief pitcher and then in April went to starting in the midweek. He got two starts against UNCG and UNC Asheville before coming in for relief work against UNC and Boston College. He worked two fairly long outings in those games before the NC State coach decided to make him the Friday starter for the rest of the year. He's thrown 29.1 innings as a Friday starter and given up 9 earned runs (3 of those this past Friday), which I believe gives him a 2.78 ERA as a starter.
He has certainly pitched against some quality teams including UNCG, UNC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Delaware, and Indiana. Against UNCG, which has a .323 batting average as a team, he threw 7 innings and gave up just 2 hits and 1 run in route to a 10-1 win. Against Delaware, who has a .310 batting average he threw 5.2 innings and gave up just 4 hits and 1 run on his way to a 7-1 victory. Against Clemson, who hits .284, he had a fairly short leash but gave up 4 hits in 4 innings, and 2 runs, both of them home runs. He left the game leading 3-2. Against UNC, who hits .283, he went 5 scoreless and gave up 4 hits. So, he has faced some pretty solid hitting teams. So, runs may be at a premium.
What is good for Kentucky is that they've faced two "starters" that were both left-handers and I have to imagine that neither one is going to be available today. Brown and Adler should both be on the shelf after throwing over 100 pitches. That means that the only lefties that they have left are Ferguson (no appearances this year), Beckman (5.09 ERA in 23 innings), Centala (no appearances), and Klyman (2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings - he threw a solid 34 pitches last night and did pretty well). So, we should see a lot of right handed pitching, or we'll see some guys that haven't thrown a whole lot of innings. I imagine we will see a good bit of Beckman if things go sour for Piedmonte though.
