Mitchell

Is he falling out of the rotation ?

He's not the same player he was earlier this season.
He doesn’t fit and he doesn’t make us better. He’s far weaker at the 4 than Thiero and Edwards. The fact that it has taken Cal this long to recognize that Adou brings a lot more than Mitchell is mind-boggling. It’s crazy that Tre was leading the team in minutes halfway through the season.

On a human level, I feel bad for the guy. He came here and was probably assured big minutes - which he got in the beginning. But with our roster, I don’t know that we need him to play a single minute.

Well to be fair he did get hurt and probably still not 100% but I agree there is better options now however when he was getting all the minutes Edwards was struggling and not producing anything

He was a mismatch at the 5. Had to respect his jumper back then, too. He is 0/14 or something the last 2 months. He just doesn’t work nearly as well as a 4.

He was quite good as a small ball 5. Cal won't play him there because he needs to spread minutes at the 5 among 3 centers.
Exactly. Cal built another strange roster.

At this point, I would call the minutes that Tre is getting sympathy minutes. If we want to have any chance in the SEC tournament and the NCAA tournament, we can’t give Tre meaningful minutes at the 4. The stretch that he’s played while we’ve been up double digits is fine, but at this point, that’s the only scenario in which we can play him.

I have said it over and over the past 2 months, and have been ridiculed plenty...Tre Mitchell should not be playing unless someone in front of him is injured or in foul trouble.

He is slow, lazy defensively, can't block shots, and can't even hit from the outside anymore. He looks terrible.

And coming into tonight’s game he was averaging 32.4 minutes. Without a doubt, he is the weakest link.

Wagner seems to at least have found his shot. Edwards is at least playing well in stretches. But Tre Mitchell is unplayable, unless the game is out of hand.

Tre is an average ball player and really always has been. He’s not what many made him out to be imo. He doesn’t do anything great and a few things well, while being pretty bad at several aspects. This team is different now than it was at the start of the year. There just aren’t going to be the minutes there when we’re playing 3 bigs.

His game is off and he’s not the type player where he can get back up to speed in a couple of games. We can’t afford to give him the time he needs at this juncture of the season.

He missed 5 games because of his shoulder. I would damn near guarantee his shoulder is still not 100%. On top of that when he is in there it's getting banged around. It's not as simple as it just going away and you being 100%

Remember when Cal said “Wagner and Mitchell only come out when they ask…they have to be on the court”…. Not even in our top 3 players but that’s the 2 that he saw as not being able to sub for and they were getting 30+ minutes. Kinda crazy when you think about it. Both are valuable but Reeves is who needs to be on the floor as much as possible with combinations of Reed/Dilly/Wagner in that order at the other 2 guard spots. And Thiero should have been obvious after the UNC game. He was a game changer in arguably our best win. (He should have had more minutes last season too and that was obvious but neither here nor there now)

Yes. It’s pure insanity. Wagner has had a couple good shooting nights (finally), but it remains the case that he’s a much lesser talent than the other guards and he’s absolutely not a lead guard. Not at any level have I seen a guy be so unaware of where he is on the court and commit a back court violation the way he did tonight. And Tre is just brutal.

If I have this roster and I’m actually trying to win at Tennessee, then win the SEC and NCAA tournament - I’m playing Reed, Dillingham, Reeves 30+ minutes per night, Thiero 25-30, Edwards 15-20, and DJ 10-15. And then just going with whatever big is working on a particular night.

Mitchell would be completely out of my rotation and Wagner would be a guy I only really play if he’s knocking down the three-point shot and helping us defensively. Other coaches have cut down their rotations at this point in the season, but here we are with CCC.

Mitchell was above average to good before he got hurt. He even led us in scoring a couple times. That said, we've got 1 game left in the season, and he's been playing awful for 5 or 6 games now. His minutes need to be cut until he can start producing. Narrow the rotations down, Cal. Theiro/Edwards should be getting the bulk of the 4 minutes.

He was nothing more than a stop-gap until the young-n's came along, and we didn't have any of the bigs at the time. If they were all like that in the beginning of the season, he'd be getting scrap minutes. That's what happens when you have depth.

I hate to be the woulda coulda shoulda guy, but could you imagine if we had gotten Dalton Knecht? I’m not even sure if we offered him or not but him on this team would’ve been bonkers.

I happen to think that the team already can be bonkers as is. Just play Dillingham, Reed, and Reeves 30+ minutes from here on out and see what happens. Play Adou 30 if he’s up for it. And use DJ and Edwards to give those four a break. Then play the big who is being most productive.

Correct!

It seems like such a easy equation ,except Cal doesn’t seem to get it!

Mitch was very valuable early on when this team was getting its feet wet in the highest level of D1 ball, now that they have 25 plus games behind them they have simply outgrown Tre .. its a good thing , but bad for him because with the addition of Z ( I know he was bad last night) and Edwards coming on there's no room for him . he needs maybe zero or 5-6 min max .

It’s a pretty solid roster if you ask me. You can’t ever fault Cal for the roster he puts together. It’s rarely the roster that’s the problem

you’d have to stop recruiting guys like Wagner to get players like Dalton. Many coaches at UK would have done that, but Calipari will never let go of the freshman angle. Our issue isn’t even that we don’t have Dalton, it’s that we’ve built the team around 3 overrated freshman. Wagner Edwards and Bradshaw couldn’t just be good for us to be top 3, we needed them to be great. Well none of them are and so instead of building a cohesive until over 3 months, we’ve been teaching Wagner how to finish a play, Edwards to learn to walk, and Bradshaw how to hold a rebound.

We’ve wasted so much time because they have to be better than they are for us to make a March run. Now we’re just happy to see Edwards producing to a minimal level and I can’t help but just get nauseated after I’m glad he turned it up a bit. I expected Edwards to be top 3 on the team.

I think it’s a roster that’s good enough to make a final four, but it could have been better. Calipari prioritizes things above a “best chance” to win a title. He’s even admitted that’s not the priority. I used to think it was coach speak until I realized he actually does it.

So we’ve got a few players that we would have been better off utilizing the portal, but Calipari is not going to let go of his NBA draft pick angle, so it can be an issue with roster configuration.

Yep, the best Mitchell has ever looked was when he was playing the center spot. And, to be honest, we still might be best with him at the 5.

But I can’t see Cal doing it.

Then we don't have Reeves. I don't see it as an upgrade.
