Mingione Season Preview

There never is with anything he says.

I know it is a short interview, but he really just didn't talk about much of substance. I think his most detail was probably about Seth Chavez. Everything else was just kind of name dropping and not a ton about skills or attributes that players have.

Sucks that there is basically no media coverage for our baseball program outside of Derek Terry. I guess it hurts when the program has been historically below average and on a recent decline, but the lack of stories/insights out there is pretty sad compared to most other SEC teams.

Jeff Drummond does a good job during the season. But lets face it, even football coverage in this area is way behind compared to the rest of the SEC. It has definitely improved but is still behind.

Historically the worst in the conference by a significant margin. Not exactly a recipe for media attention.

Is it just me or was there not a lot of real meat in that interview?
I’m with you. Not much there.

Do you think that means there are still questions to answer? Can’t really say much if spots are still in the air.

Maybe Byars and Williams are throwing a wrench into everything?

Hard to say. I think he is often lacking in details and I've been a bit critical of how he speaks about things compared to some other coaches. Like Lawson, for instance, seems like she has a really great knowledge of her players and their strengths and weaknesses. She'll discuss that and the team's strengths overall. That hasn't been Mingione’s style.

Last year he talked a bit more about plate approach and discipline and players grinding out ABs. Have not yet heard that type of speak from him. Don't know what that's a sign of, if anything.

He did mention Williams, and I'd expect he is throwing a wrench into things a bit. Might depend on how he feels stamina wise on how he's used. Don't know if he mentioned Byars at all, but I may have missed it.

^ He did mention Byars. Not much detail but it was as if he would be in the mix. Only guy that he singled out for a starting position was Guillams at 1B iirc.

He also mentioned defense last year being a top priority after the previous year.

Very true.

I think this is a good example of what I mean by not much meat. In the Derek Terry interview he was asked about this year's offensive style and his answer was:

As you went back to last year and just think about how we were playing at our best offensively, it was attacking aggressively and intelligently type of offense. I was excited about this fall the amount of guys that bunted and laid down bunts on their own. The way we ran the bases, we had to have an upbeat, attacking-style offense. That was fun to see this fall.”

So, he first mentions last year, which isn't overly relevant to this year given the turnover. In regards to this year he doesn't really mention a style other than calling it, 'attacking-style,' and his first mention is about bunts. It is just kind of a weird way of answering this question. Maybe he is saying that they want to focus on small ball and aggressive base running? I don't know. Just not a lot of meat here regarding what is likely to be the offensive identity of the team.

I did not watch the video, but did look over the media guide.

I try to be a lot better fan of the baseball team than the football/basketball teams, these kids are largely walk ons, and not getting NIL money, etc. I try not to be overly critical.

That being said, lets just say I hope the baseball team wildly exceeds my expectations for 2023. :(
