Middle of field pass routes

Does PT's inaccuracy and inability to let the ball go on time preclude using any crossing or levels routes?
Seems all the passes are directed to numbers to sideline. Baker had one catch on a slant that was a big gain and there was one time where Baker did run a cross and the ball was high. From where I sat, could not tell whether it was behind or just off his hands.
Granted a whole lot of time we are in a max protection with only 2 wr running routes.

How many times did Florida throw to the tight end? It's like we don't even have one after all the talk about how good Conrad could be.

I was wondering that myself. The only passes we seem to throw between the hashmarks are the slant patterns we throw to Baker.

In a word, yes. There is less "margin for error" when throwing across the middle. But you would have to ask the coaches to get a real answer.

great observation, thats been noticed by me as well. the safeties have to respect that we will throw the ball in the middle. when they dont, theyre hanging out at the hashes making those throws damn near impossible.

So when we are in the diamond set, the D will just put 8 in the box and one safety back?
Probably. The defense will generally "match up" a LB for each RB in the backfield. Plus many teams look to the run when you play 2 high safeties so you drop a guy and play Man Free in the back.

Now IF you have an RB with great speed (i.e., Wiliiams) one of the things you can do is use a 3 back set (i.e., diamond or inverted wishbone or whatever you want to call it) to "compress" the defense then simply try to outrun them to the outside. That is tough to do against FL but might work against others. I recall FL doing this a few years back when they had some very speedy backs (i.e., Percy Harvin, et. al.). However, I don't recall the Cats actually trying a straight up toss sweep type play from this set.

Peace
