Miami Loses. Josh Newberg Tosses Mark Stoops Name Out There

Miami would be a nice big name school that isnt exactly a great situation for Stoops to turn down, like Marrow with Michigan last season would look good for the program if they made a push but Stoops stayed. Would help him downplay future rumors him leaving if such and such school came after him as well.

People who aren't close to our program just don't know anything about the situation. Mark Stoops has his fingerprint on everything going on and is getting everything he wants...he is basically building his ideal program from the ground up.

Also a very loyal guy from a very loyal family...ya never know, but I don't see him as Mr Miami at this stage.

Would Mark Stoops leave for Miami? **hypothetically speaking**

I think the only program that Stoops would even entertain, not take but listen to, is tOSU when Urban has his next breakdown. As well as he is recruiting Ohio, his ties to the south, and how he has turned UK around his name probably will get mentioned when that time comes. Now i am not saying he will take it, but they would likely give him a chance to say no.

I think you're right. I can see that happening in a few years.

In a few more years the UK job will be more desirable than Miami IMO. They have unrealistic expectations from their run in the 80s/90s. Kinda remind of Nebraska, they will never be the powerhouse they once were either. But unlike Nebraska, Miami just doesn't have the fan support that they had back then. It is a shell of itself.

Stoops isn't going anywhere anytime soon. If he does go elsewhere it would be somewhere near his home. Just because he coached in Florida doesn't mean that's where he wants to go.

Not saying you are wrong, but 5 national titles is always going to be a nice trump card to have in recruiting, along with living near Southbeach and in the easy to recruit state of FL.

miami is a school that recruits itself. you can have top 10 classes and compete for a title there. it is one of 3 jobs i thought might come open in the next few years that kinda scares me. i think stoops stays but i hate the timing of this.... if golden gets canned this year. though it would be awesome publicity if he did turn it down... then you get people afraid to even ask cause they don't want to be told "no" by the UK coach.

Mark Stoops by end of season will move into the 5 million a year range and with the new SEC network money he has about 12 million a year to spend on upgrades to the program. He will leave us one day, of that I have no illusions. However it will be a top 5 to 8 program when he does. Stoops also is mindful of the pressures of a big program. Look at Tenn., they basically where in same situation as us and Butch Jones has recruited very well. Having lost a couple close games they are already people wanting him out at rocky top. Stoops has a opportunity to make himself a legend at UK. If he stays they will build statutes in his honor.

I think the only ACC school that could lure Stoops away from UK would be Florida State.

Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State are the three big schools I would be worried about. I think he would think long and hard about a Wisconsin type job as well.

i Just do not see Stoops seriously considering anyone for the next 4 or 5 years. I just think loyalty is a great gene in his personalty. Uk can & will pay the big bucks, so that will not be a factor.

Miami might go after Petrino though. A rogue school and a rogue coach. That's a match made in heaven. Bring in Strong and Clint Hurt and Miami would be set.

Strong's days are numbered at Texas....If Miami pulls the plug on Golden, I would expect Strong to be at the head of the line....and Clint Hurt will be on the staff.....

Mark Stoops will become our Frank Beamer or Bill Snyder etc.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and the more successful he becomes the more programs will come after him. Some of those programs have a lot to offer but he will never leave the ideal situation that he has here - everything he wants and job security.

  1. The U used to be a top draw in Miami. Now they are just a college in a pro sports town.
  2. The budget is broke down there.
  3. Why would Stoops want to start over?

I simply don't see Stoops leaving here for anyone other than tOSU, maybe Michigan St., or Michigan. I don't think he would jump directly to another SEC school and quite frankly he would need to make an SEC title game or two here at UK to remotely get the lure of an SEC power school. He has everything he needs here to be successful...huge fan base, playing in the best football conference, proximity to his bread and butter recruiting base Ohio, facilities...and now the financial backing of the university to propel the program to higher level. On top of that, he is loyal guy who will always remember who gave him his first head coaching gig.

been reading around and no one is mentioning stoops for this job in the top 3.

Miami is the one job I think he could leave for this season. It's the first major program to give him a big break into coaching. Is where he coached one of the greatest teams of all time.

That said, Mark Stoops is not a hire that's going to excite that Miami fanbase. They need a rock star to pull that program back together. IMO it's Butch Davis or bust.

Wonder how James Coley feels now about not following Stoops to Kentucky, as was Stoops' plan when he pitched the job to Barnhart.

The conditions that were allowed to go on during their heyday are off limits now and they are at best third in the pecking order for FL recruits now.

And lmao at the thought that Miami/Southbeach is a draw as a place to raise a family.

New and interesting dilemma for UK to face...
Yep. For now I'm just going to tell myself unless it's OSU or FSU, UK doesn't have anything to worry about, will pay to keep him content, and Stoops likes the idea of sticking around for a while to see just what kind of program he can build here. He already knows he'd got a nice foundation started.

Funny you should mention Coley. Last night his O looked totally discombobulated. They had to piss away 2 4th Q TOs to get lined up correctly. It was also mentioned that Miami was next to last in the NCAA on 3d down conversions and at that time they were only 2 out of 10 in the game. UK may have dodged a bullet with him.

I don't know, I just feel like Stoops has his sweet spot there in Lexington.

Miami just isn't a good situation in my opinion - even though they live in such a fertile recruiting area.

Not a chance in Hades. OSU, FSU, Michigan and Notre Dame are the only ones to really worry about, and the longer Stoops stays the less worried we need to be. If Stoops stays another three years I'm betting he'll retire from UK.

I feel like some of you all are kidding yourselves. Who are you all to say what Stoops really wants? IMHO, UK is a stepping stone for CMS (I hope you all acknowledge this). I'm sure there are a number of jobs he would leave us for if the right situation came, not just 3-4 jobs. UK football has everything he wants? I'm as big of a UK football fan as they come, but I really doubt that statement. I hope he proves me wrong. Just being a realist.

Stoops will be here at least until he sees just how far this thing can go. No way he leaves in the middle of the "process" as he calls it and here's why
1. He is enjoying the build,
2. I think he truly believes his potential here is unlimited right now, may change his mind later but not until that view changes.
3. He has proven to himself and others that the biggest drawback to getting this thing to the next level (getting good players) may not be the case anymore and I think he believes that will continue to be even less of a drawback as the wins pile up.
4. He seems the type to be more comfortable in a place where he can build and make something on his own instead of jumping into a place with all the pressure to just maintain tradition already there.

Again all of this will change if he reaches a point where it seems he's hit a ceiling here, but not until then IMO. I think his loyalty and appreciation for us giving him his first chance will keep him away from jumping for any other reason for a while

and by comparison Eddie Gran's offense the last 2 weeks has looked excellent, even with a frosh QB filling in for an injured starter....allegedly Gran was a finalist for our OC job opening last off season along with Lincoln Riley

When Marrow was courted by Michigan, he said something that really struck me. He said, that he talked to Stoops and didn't want to leave UK unfinished......that he still had work to do here. I think Stoops feels the same way. I can't say that Stoops won't ever leave UK, but I don't think it will be this yr. If he improves UK to the point where he feels that he can't take them any further.....or if he feels that he has accomplished what he set out to do, then I can see him leaving.

it doesn't matter what jobs he theoretically would take. it only matters what jobs may come open the next few years that he would be the guy and would take the job. that's why most of us only say 3 or so jobs would be attractive for him. texas could offer a ton but does anyone think after charlie that they would go after a guy with 1 good season?

I have to respectfully disagree, UK is so far below OSU in the minds of its fans and administration that they would never consider Coach Stoops has a replacement. What has he done? Now if he can get UK to several SEC championships and into the playoffs who knows but that ain't happening anytime soon.
