Canes may never be back to the glory years of the 90s early 00’s but they surely can be a 8 to 10 win team year in and out.
In a weak league like the ACC, you'd think so. The job has its pros and cons if you're a coach...
Pros:
* Nice weather and glitzy town for out of state recruits.
* Abundance of talent within a two hour drive.
* Very nice stadium to play in.
* Good tradition, albeit fading fast.
Cons:
* Very small fan base. TV and internet fan boys from the 80s and 90s don't count. This is a pro sports town with tons of other entertainment options and you're competing against that.
* That small fan base makes it embarrassing to bring recruits in for games when half or more of the crowd belongs to your opponent.
* That nice stadium you play in doesn't belong to you. You're just renting it 7 or 8 times a year, and it's nearly an hour away from campus. Hard to get many rowdy students there to support your program.
* All that abundant local talent? Everyone in the country is recruiting it too, and some kids just want to get away from home. And you still have to do a good job of evaluating that local talent. Just being from South Florida doesn't automatically make a kid a great player or a good fit for you. I watched a 5 star WR that is committed to Free Shoes U™ play a few weeks ago. He didn't appear to be injured or sick, but on that night, he was closer to Bryce Oliver than Randy Moss.
* The Miami (FL) program has a lot of jock sniffing boosters and self-important former players who want to inject themselves into the program thinking they can help recreate the "glory days", but often just wind up causing problems and ripping the coaching staff to shreds in the media.
