Meadowlark Lemon Dies

My childhood memories just took a hit. Sad loss for society in general. His job was brining joy to people. Not a lot of that innocent entertainment left in the world anymore.

I can't remember how many Globetrotters games I saw as a kid, but it never got old. He was a great entertainer and will be missed.

I loved Curly too, but no one compares to Meadowlark...He stands alone with his personality unparalleled, his stage persona, and his ability.

Curly actually might be the better dribbler, but he just didn't have the magic Meadowlark had with the crowd.
I still loved to see Curly go, but he just wasn't Meadowlark.

OT- I haven't paid much attention to the HG since the late 70's really. I was looking at their history and previous players and was surprised to see one Orlando Antigua as a former player. Totally unaware of that.

I may have to throw a bucket of fake water on a coworker in honor of his passing.

Truly a great entertainer. RIP

I not only saw him with the Globetrotters but, if any of the old timers remember, he started an offshoot group called The Bucketeers with Marques Haynes (who also passed away this year) back in the late 70's/early 80's. I saw them at Louisville Gardens once and have autographs from both of those men that evening.

Yes, it's true and Willie Cauley Stein was a wide receiver in high school.

I go back a little further than most of you and my two favorite Globetrotters were Goose Tatum and Marques Haynes. RIP Meadowlark.

Yeah Cleveland backed over him a few years ago. But in all seriousness. RIP. And for the people who have no idea what I'm talking about that means you don't watch the Cleveland show.

Whoops...I forgot to think...not an uncommon thing......goose and Marcus were great too.

All four of those guys ran the team and performance to the delight of everyone.

Hanger1....you are bringing back so many memories, with my grandad, later with my dad, and, in right of passage activity with my son, about 20 years ago. I first saw them in Paducah gym, 40 miles from my home town in Fulton. I think they called it the auditorium, when I was about 8 ..over 58 years ago. My granddad took me. Then later in Memphis with my dad when I was about 12 or 13, with our Boy Scout troop. I still have a signed program from that Paducah game.

One could not go to one of the GT games and not come out smiling, feeling good, and going over the best "plays" of the night, over and over again, and just laughing and smiling.

Happy New Year everyone.

Getting old sucks, but to have had the great pleasure of seeing the greats of the game play, is priceless.

Yep, lots of memories there. I was fortunate to see them one time, was probably 1970 or 71. They came into town and the game was at Henry Clay HS's gym, IIRC. They also used to pop up on ABC's Wide World of Sports occasionally.

Others have already mentioned the half court hook and the bucket of confetti. How about the rubber band ball and how he would torment the ref's with it? Also when Meadowlark used to post up in the FT circle and they would do a bunch of weaves with him passing the ball and getting it back, etc. Then Meadowlark would pull down the pants of the guy guarding. And, one of my all time favorites, when he would fake an injury and the other HG's would be rubbing his arm and shoulder and then Meadowlark would moan "It's my leeeeegggg!". LOL!

RIP Meadowlark and have fun in that big magic circle in the sky.

Did I just find the nursing home part of rafters?

Never heard of him. I'm under 30.

Sounds like an amazing talent. I'll have to educate myself this afternoon and catch some of his work.

Rip.

Oh man! Do some youtube searches for the Harlem Gobe Trotters and watch in amazement.

I've been trying to hit that half court sideline hook shot for 30 years. RIP Meadowlark.
One of the more remarkable basketball feats ever was how he would make that shot most of the time. Saw them at Memorial in towards the end of their time but still doing their thing. Meadowlark lit up the place just with his smile. Running the weave in heaven now.
