Matt Jones expects Jay Boulware to be the new RB and Special Teams coach at Kentucky

A good recruiter, a good RB coach, a good special teams coach and a long history of doing each of those 3 things at multiple programs. He's also a helluva TE coach. It is also interesting to note that he played offensive tackle and has coached the OL position at one of his previous jobs, so perhaps he could help out a bit there too. I don't think you could find a guy with a better resume than Boulware. It would also be nice to finally have a guy with some Texas connections who can perhaps expand our recruiting territory.

Funny how all the TV stations report news on sports and no one loses their minds!! Did Matt say he is the only one who has this news!! LOL

I guess the 3rd contender was Boulware. ;)

Why doesn’t the oc hire these guys? He only calls plays or what?
Who knows? For all we know, the guy that will ultimately end up being the OC may very well be involved in the process. There is just so much we don't yet know. And nobody that knows is saying anything.

Not that this is a bad hire but it is worth noting that he hasn’t had a job in 2 seasons. If he can fix our ST he will be worth it regardless of whether he can recruit. And that would be the question mark is if he is a decent recruiter at all anymore.

I would definitely say I’m a little disappointed that it’s another retread from Bob’s past and not an actual ace recruiter.

I mean, that's how college football works. Head coaches hire the staff, all of them. They don't hire the DC & OC, then let those 2 guys hire the assistants.

FWIW Oklahoma fans are NOT complimentary of this guys coaching abilities, at least with running backs. Good in the kicking game & recruiting.

Seems odd that we hire a guy who has coached as much football as I have the past 2 years. If he’s so great, seems like he would have gotten another gig.

When is people going to realize that Matt jones never really has a scoop until a bit after it’s passed around here. Matt jones has used info from Rowland forever JR always posts first then 30 min to a hour later jones has “breaking news” lol

I know Eddie Gran gets mentioned a lot as the catch-all "he can do it" guy, but in this case, if Boulware is a stud recruiter and great ST coach then let him keep the title and shift RB stuff to Gran. Seems like an easy fix

He had talent to work with for sure. But didn't seem to waste it. He left Oklahoma to go to Texas, so I'm sure the Oklahoma fans online were very rational and fair.

Bio
• Wrapped up fourth year coaching Oklahoma running backs in 2018 and sixth as special teams coordinator. OU’s special teams have produced nine TDs, a safety and three returned two-point PATs under his direction.

• Has produced five 1,000-yard rushers the last four years and four of his running backs during that time have earned first- or second-team All-Big 12 honors. Joe Mixon, Samaje Perine and Rodney Anderson have all been NFL Draft picks since 2017.

• Presided over a 2018 running backs group that helped OU lead the nation in yards per carry (6.6). Redshirt freshman Kennedy Brooks ranked third nationally with 8.9 yards per rush (minimum 9.0 carries per game) and was a USA Today Freshman All-American (1,056 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns), and Trey Sermon ran for 947 yards and 13 TDs.

• Key part of offensive staff that saw the 2017 Sooners rank first nationally in yards per game (579.6) and third in scoring (45.1 ppg). OU also led the Big 12 with its 217.8 rushing yards per contest. Including OU’s Oct. 14 win over Texas, RB Rodney Anderson ranked second nationally (first among Power 5 players) the rest of the season in yards from scrimmage per game (153.4) and touchdowns from scrimmage (17).

• Oversaw one of the nation’s top running back tandems in 2015 and 2016. Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon both declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after stellar careers. Perine, OU’s all-time rushing leader (4,122 yards), ran for 2,409 yards and 28 TDs after Boulware moved to running backs coach, while Mixon ran for 2,027 yards and 17 TDs his last two years. Mixon also caught 65 passes for 894 yards and nine TDs.

• Mentored All-Pac-10 RB Mike Bell, who finished his career with 3,163 rushing yards, the third-highest total in Arizona history.

NCAA allows I think it's 10 assistant coaches. UK could do as you suggest but they'd have to terminate another position coach and that's unlikely to happen.

Would that be necessary if Gran keeps his current title, but just does the work behind the scenes?

Stoops offered him when he brought in Settle. Jay wanted and needed some time away. Now seems he’s recharged his batteries and ready to roll. It’s a great hire for us.

Yes. I should've qualified that statement about being allowed 10 assistants by stating that's 10 on-field assistants. Other guys are advisors, quality control, grad assistants(can coach on the field in practice), interns, etc. They are allowed on the sidelines for home games but don't travel with the team for road games(think I'm right on that). It's all a convoluted thing, some schools twist it to their favor but bottom line is everybody's allowed 10 fulltime paid on field assistants. Not sure if there's a limit on off field guys(look at pics of Alabama's coaches meetings, must be 30 guys in the room).

What's "funny" is the TV stations always credit the people breaking the story
