In college athletics we (the NCAA) want to talk about "student" involvement but at the same time wants to treat them as adult professionals. My point goes to "celebration".
In two instances in the last week, UK players were penalized for "celebrating" a good play by being awarded technical fouls. In neither instance could the celebrating (or in particular, slamming the ball) be construed as taunting as they were surrounded by their own teammates.
The same holds true in football, where any celebration or excitement after making an outstanding play can and will be flagged.
College athletics is SUPPOSED to be about enthusiasm and excitement, unlike professional sports but yet they young athlete is slapped with a penalty for being what they are supposed to be, kids.
I have absolutely no issue when an athelete "taunts" an opposing player or team, but there needs to be a differentiation between the two.
