Looking at a piece of memorobilia and I've heard of the Sugarbowl Basketball games but I cannot seem to find any history other than link below.

Any help would be appreciated.

Was it just a holiday tournament?

OMG

Dec 31 1963. UK vs #1 Duke. New Orleans

My first UK game. My dad had it on the radio. Became a Cats fan that night. Listened to Claude Sullivan and Coach Rupp afterward and have not missed 10 games since.

Terry Mobley hits a last second jumper to win it for UK 81/79.

You can goggle part of the radio broadcast - 1963 Kentucky Duke Sugarbowl basketball
Awesome! Still get chills with it.

They play a Sugar bowl classic still at the same time of year and the same site but it's HS a thing. It's the Allstate Sugar bowl I'm not sure about the college level and surely their is something on Google somewhere about it. It's probably like all the old school tournaments that was played like a UKIT that is no longer in existence. I don't know much about it but I do vaguely remember us playing in that or more of it being mentioned that I remember the actual game.

Looks like it was always right before New Years right before the football game. A two day tournament. It ended in the early 60’s and they brought it back for one game in 1999z

Thanks gents. Appears to be a watch up for bidding from a Louisville player in '64. I had to hunt down player on sports reference. I guess they are brothers.

It is inscribed J.Reuther. There were both a Joe and John Reuther at Louisville in 1964 which is the tourney watch is from. John was a baller...18/10 guy. Joe, not so much. Can't say I've heard of either.

My dad and myself listened to the game versus duke and if memory serves me correctly duke lead for most of the game. Not sure but that is what I'm thinking

They did, 12-point lead early in the first. 10 at halftime. It was 79-79 Duke ball and Kentucky stole it I believe and held it for the winning basket. Kentucky's Cotton Nash had 30. Duke only lost two more games the rest of the season steam rolling every ACC team but two by double digits (including in the ACC Tournament.) The two losses were @ Wake Forest by 1 point and then in the 1964 National Championship game to Wooden's UCLA Bruins.

I remember listening to that game on the radio!

It was held at Loyola (LA) which back in those days was a Division 1 school. Today Loyola’s athletics is in the southern States Athletic Conference in the NAIA.

The Sugar Bowl was a New Year's Holiday event in conjunction with and leading up to the Sugar Bowl football game in New Orleans. It included a basketball invitational along with other sports.

The early games were held in the Municipal Auditorium but later that moved to Loyola campus. Originally teams played a single game, but later it was changed to a four-team mini-tournament.

Don’t remember the Duke UK game although I’m sure I listened to it on the radio. Never missed a UK game.

The first game I do remember is the game where Ga Tech ended the UK 129 game home court winning streak. Was so mad and certain the Cats would get revenge later at Tech. But Tech won that game too.

Don’t remember a lot of games from the 50s but those stood out.
Of course beating Seattle for Rupps fourth is a great memory.

Also The Temple game where Hatton makes the near half court shot at the buzzer to force OT which the Cats won

An odd game I remember was a game against Maryland where the Terps had a 3 point lead with under 10 seconds to go and Cats had to go length of court and of course no 3 point shot way back then. I believe it was Gerry Calvert who drove the length of the court, made a layup and was fouled by the Maryland center. Believe his name was Bunge. Anyway the ft was made and Cats won in OT.

Recall this game. Those little 2-day 4 team invitational tourneys were pretty frequent around Christmas/New Years at that time.

UKIT was active during that era too.

Good memory.

The boxscore for that game is below:

Here's a photo of Al Bunge (#54) about to foul Bennie Coffman which led to the overtime.

I discuss this game a little bit in my Kentucky-Maryland rivalry page.

Jon, what was the last Sugar Bowl Classic game UK participated in? Another poster mentioned us playing Mizzou in '99 but, I think we played in it more recently than that. However, I may be mixing up that game with something else.

Thx. Wasn’t sure it was Calvert but knew it was one of the guards. Calvert must have played the year before or year after. Know he was around that time.
Gerry Calvert’s last season was 1956-57, so two seasons before that game.

For anyone not aware, my website covers in detail just about every game and every player who ever played for Kentucky.

That’s the last I’m aware of. Since then they did play a number of times in New Orleans but mainly in the SEC or NCAA tournament. They did play against UNC in New Orleans in 2017-18 season as part of the CBS Sports Classic. That may have been what you are thinking?

Looking at some of UK's results in the Sugar Bowl classic gives you a glimpse of how tough St. Louis used to be back in the day. They beat us in the 49, 50 and 51 seasons. They have fallen way off but they were a power in the 40's and 50's and we played them frequently.

I was thinking of that game versus Tulane in 2002. Thought it was the Sugar Bowl Classic. My mistake. Thanks.

I discuss this game a little bit in my Kentucky-Maryland rivalry page.
Bennie Coffman, who was the first JUCO transfer (out of Lindsey Wilson) to play for Coach Rupp, passed away last week at the age of 86. After graduating from UK he played and coached AAU ball then had a long, successful career as the girls’ basketball coach at Boone County.

He was an attorney with an office in downtown Lexington for many years. I had a brief teenage flirtation with his daughter one summer

Great post Mobley I believe was from hazard he left the team cotton Nash was on this team and Duke had jeff Mullins a all american who was from Lexington that played at Lafayette I heard that Billy Ray lickert advised him not to go to UK and play for rupp

What's odd Vince Taylor played at tates creek in 1978 went to Duke and Jeff Mullins played for Lafayette 1962 and went to Duke two hs all Americans chose Duke over UK strange

I don’t know the deal was was Taylor, but Mullins is not surprising if you know how Mullins got to Lexington Lafayette and had no real tie to UK.

Mullins moved to Lexington during high school because his Dad was transferred from New York State to Lexington
by IBM when IBM built there operation out at New Circle and Newtown Pike. He was an east coast kid already tied to the ACC and Duke before he ever got to LEX.

Seems like i remember UK playing duke one year. If memory serves me correctly
It was Dec. 63, The game was played in New Orleans. Duke had Jeff Mullins, their all american, from Lexington, two 6'10" players named Tyson and Buckley and a great overall team that I believe was ranked in the top 5. Ky had Cotton Nash who at 6"5" was Ky's tallest player. Duke led throughout the game by as much as ten points and Ky was having difficulty getting a rebound because of Duke's height advantage. Late in the game Nash and I believe Ted Deeken got hot and the cats pulled it out in the last minute or so. I remember being home from college and sitting at the kitchen table listening to Cawood call the game. One of the sweetest Ky victories of all time for me since I have always been a Duke hater. As an aside Jeff Mullins tried to replace Eddie Sutton as the Ky head coach underscoring his native Lextonian connection. Thankfully, the AD in essence said to Mullins "you turned your back on us when we tried to recruit you out of high school why should we show any loyalty to you now." Tommy Kron and Larry Conley were on that team along with Randy Emery and Mickey Gibson from Hazard perhaps the team's most talented player.
I think the BB sugar bowl was played every December in New Orleans with four of the best teams in the country competing in a two day tournament. I'm almost 81 so if I have some of the incidentals wrong then chalk it up to old age!

Thanks, I had not heard that. FWIW, Coffman was not the first JUCO transfer to play for Rupp. (Not even the 1st to transfer from Lindsey-Wilson) so not sure why that was put in his obituary.
