Lon Kruger one of the most underrated coaches

Yep. Kruger's not flashy, and he's not landing 1 and done caliber recruits, but his teams always look well coached, disciplined, make good decisions, and play rock hard defense. Just a good solid old school coach who knows the game and how to win.

I've always wondered why he's moved around so much, not always for better jobs. He's supposedly been well liked and respected everywhere he's coached. He's been successful just about everywhere he's been, but he has always had some wanderlust.

Good coach with a good team. Not sure about the quality of teams they've played so far. Old selfie better look out.

He is a very good coach but he has a ceiling. I think his best work was taking DeClerq and Da Meat Hook (Demetri hill) to the F4. That was a grand year for the SEC. He is a savior to a lot of schools but for an upper level program like UK he is way over his head. Kruger is the girl that ranks at a 7, the one you settle on. Almost the total package but missing a few key ingredients. Guys like him might luck into a F4 or even a title here and there because of their staying power but they will never put together runs like Cal, Rick, K and others of that ilk.

His "ceiling" appears to be recruiting. The man has always been very good at getting the very most out of what he's got. But it's hard to reach the very top unless what you've "got" is some top tier NBA lottery type talent, and Kruger's never been able to get much of that.

He might have a shot this year, though.

Meh.

There are clearly a lot of far worse coaches out there, but Kruger seems to me to fall into the category of "overrated because he gets mentioned so much as being underrated".

He had that FF at Florida, but his overall record there was 104-80. Donovan came along and set a whole new standard for the school.

Kruger then went to Illinois, and went 81-48 in 4 years, never getting past the Sweet 16. They brought in Self, and Kruger was quickly forgotten.

His NBA stint was bad.

At UNLV, he had consistent winners, but 1 Sweet 16 appearance in 7 years.

At Oklahoma, he's never lost fewer than 10 games.

Good enough to stay employed, but not anything special.

Wasn't he the coach that Cal got into it with? Something about a recruit, and negative recruiting tactics?

Guy continues to move to different jobs.

Had he locked in at a Kansas St or Florida, he would be more well revered.

He seems to catch lightning in a bottle ever so often. This might be his year for that.

Kruger has a very talented team at Oklahoma and should make noise in the NCAAs. This could be his best chance to get to the Final4 again!

I am very proud of Lon Kruger's association with Florida. He was in a chain of coaches that did great things at Florida:
Norm Sloan - took UF to 1st three NCAA tourneys ever. Won 1st SEC title at UF.
Lon Kruger - took UF to 1st ever Final4 (many SEC schools are still trying to reach one).
Billy Donovan (HOF career at UF): 6 SEC titles/4 SEC Tourney titles. 4 Final4's, three Elite8's, etc. 500+ wins, and back-to-back NC's.
