Franklin says Buh “genuinely likes recruiting” and all that goes with it.

“He likes being in homes. He likes young people,” Franklin said. “He has a great personality and endearing smile. He will be a home run recruiter for them. He did a great job when he was coaching at Stanford. In my opinion, he can build relationships anywhere. I know at Kentucky you have to go all over to recruit. He could go to Hawaii, California or Florida. He will be fine anywhere. He can walk in and recruit anybody with his personality.”

From what I've gathered about him he seems like a good coach and a great recruiter whose biggest mistake was agreeing to coach a team that was going to be more than a two year rebuild. Dykes started axing assistants before they could even change half of the roster over. Probably what Franklin meant about the timing being the biggest issue that kept him from being successful at Cal. The fact that he was demoted instead of fired probably speaks to his value as a recruiter for them

I like the idea of having an experienced ex-DC on the staff. Will be even better if he can pull in a few California JUCOs.

gives me a good feeling getting someone who has spent time on staff at Wisconsin & Stanford. both tough and usually overachieving programs.

He was demoted because because he had a large buyout in his contract, and he was demoted to an administrative position, so he couldn't recruit off campus anyhow.

That said, I think it was a good hire. From what I can determine, this guy is basically a linebacker whisperer. It's his specialty and he has done a very, very good job as a position coach.

Thanks for clearing that up DA I was under the impression that he was demoted to a position coach. Do you get the impression that Buh was scapegoated by Dykes so save his own skin or was Buh just not cracked up to be a DC?

Good hire, I'm a fan of hiring guys who have had experience in big time schools instead of getting guys from Juco or lower tier schools like North Texas for example. They have the know how on what it takes to run a big program and why they succeeded or failed at their previous stops.
They know the game that is played in living rooms in landing recruits and already have an established spider web network of schools they already have relationships with.
They can provide valuable insight to the coaches we already have on how things were run and done at this big school or that big school. They know this assistant and that assistant who are excellent coaches but would love to leave and coach in the sec or a move up or want more pay.

Just some thoughts on why I love to have an experienced staff instead of getting guys from the middle of no where to compose most of your staff. Better to have one of those guys instead of 4.

Agree

Really optimistic with the changes instituted for defensive coaching this season. Buh to give our linebackers more attention and better teaching. Stoops getting more hands on with instructing the secondary, the area where he excelled as one of the best coaching that position in the country.
