So says Jon Rothstein.
Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein

Hearing Kentucky may toy with a super long lineup that features Kevin Knox at SG. Would give Cats four guys on floor over 6-9. Zone? #BBN

So, what does that mean for Diallo? Playing the 1? On the bench? What would be your line-up with Knox at 2? Rothstein seems to be suggesting 1. Green (or Alexander) 2. Knox 3. Vanderbilt 4. Gabriel 5. Richards.

Hard for me to imagine that Diallo isn't playing maximum minutes, if for no other reason than his insane athleticism should play right into Cal's hands in focusing on a defensive dynamo.

I guess a wing by any other name is still a wing, but Diallo doesn't strike me as a 3, certainly not on defense.
Not a typical 3 but no way he sits. Knox at the 2 puts him at the 3 unless Cal just calls him and Green both lead guards

I really believe Washington is going to be our "5" in a Draymond Green kinda way.

Just reading tea leaves, I think you might be right. One of the point guards, Diallo, Knox, Vanderbilt, Washington. Insanely athletic and versatile lineup.

I could easily see Knox at 2 and Diallo at 3 on offense. Then switch on defense.

Zone's a pipe dream more than likely. If we see it as much as we did in 13-14 I'll be impressed. But the length in that lineup is a defensive advantage no matter what system we're in.

a PG
3 wings
a post

or

a PG
four wings

Those are our main lineups this year. Forget about traditional positions and think about that '06 Memphis team that smacked us in Hawaii by driving-and-kicking all day.

That's the day I wanted Cal as a coach. I remember thinking Willie Kemp (IIRC) would start for us, and he was riding the bench.

It is all depending on matchups. If we want to be a better rebounding team or defensive team I would say that lineup is great. If we run a lot than Diallo will play a ton. Our main guys will get 30 mpg no matter when they play.

Since we are just pulling it all out of our anuses:

1.) B-Rad Calipari
2.) Wenyan's Manhood
3.) Tai Wynyard
4.) Jonny David
5.) Quade Green

I just don't see any way that Diallo starts on the bench, not the way Cal works his system. Diallo decided to come back and Cal rewards guys for doing that as we saw, endlessly, with Briscoe and with Andrew over Ulis vs Wisconsin (which so many like to bring up on this board). Just my take.

My first reaction to this is that SKJ and Richards aren't impressing Cal. I sure hope that's not the case. As I said yesterday, though, this MIGHT be the year our best team has no true center.

Game with Bama should be good with nice guards and wings on both teams.

Sorry no way! dude is a 3/4 and no way Diallo isn't starting at the 2.. Diallo IMO is going yo be better tgen Monk.. That is just asinine Knox at the 2!! That dudes an idiot!

Maybe we run a lineup with no real point but 2 lead guards (Green & Diallo) ala 2009-10 with Wall/Bledsoe, then not a traditional 3/4 but rather 2 long wings (Vanderbilt, Knox, Gabriel), and then a long athletic big (Washington or Richards)

Knox at the 2 on offense in the sense his the focus of the offense ala monk but he wouldnt be our 2. Hami is our 2.

We get too caught up in the numbers and positions sometime. I am guilty as much as anyone.

But I think it really means that Knox will be in the Murray/Monk role, with Diallo in the Briscoe role on offense. Diallo still guards the "2" and Knox guards the "3", though (but remember Cal switches everything).

Offensively is where Knox plays the "2" or "SG" for lack of a better term.

That makes more sense to me.

I do like the idea of Vanderbilt running the Point on offense, if he can. We could then have Knox on one wing and Diallo on the other on offense. On defense, Diallo guards the 1, Vanderbilt guards the 2, Knox guards the 3. That's some monster length.

1. Vanderbilt
2. Knox
3. WG
4. Washington
5. Richards

Why not?

Because:

1. No Diallo
2. Not enough ballhandling
3. Not enough outside shooting
4. Not enough spacing
5. We'd commit an insane number of turnovers.

Anyone who thinks you can just bypass having point guard skills on the floor simply has not been watching the sport in recent years.

Really I think we are going to play like this at the 1-3:

Green- playing the Teague/Ulis/Fox role.
Knox- playing the Lamb/Murray/Monk role.
Diallo- playing the MKG/Briscoe role.

Defensively, Green guards the PG, Diallo is going to probably be on the best perimeter player, just like MKG and Briscoe did most of the time. Knox will most likely defend the "weaker" scorer.

Because Vanderbilt isn't a pg.

True.

But he has exhibited PG skills.

I don't know if he could run the Point in college, but it is an intriguing idea. Unlikely, but intriguing, nonetheless.

It is an interesting topic for UK basketball junkies to discuss in the middle of August on a message board.

At times Knox will play the 2 if diallo is out. I also think cal could put jv at the 2 for a few mins if need be since he has excellent handles. Hell at times diallo could play the 3. It will be interesting to see because we have 5 guys that can play multiple positions and we should never lose the rebounding game

It means Diallo won't play 40mpg.
Don't read too much into this.

You can add Diallo. I wouldn't mind. Change him with WG.

Not enough ball handling? You obviously are clueless on this account.

Not enough outside shooting? Well. If that's he case why did you say Diallo? And you are talking about one player in QG. That's it.

you are arguing redundant point. The team in general doesn't have good shooting / spacing.

No, we wouldn't. We would take advantage of weakness

We do have multiple point guard skill players. Just because they aren't labeled PG doesn't mean they don't have PG skills.

I think you seem to be one not watching basketball recently. Also. This line up I proposed isn't starting line up. It's one of those "let's try it out" line up like having Knox at #2. He'll majority play 3 while Diallo plays 2.

Also. The so called "positionless" basketball the main point is you have 4 basketball players (multi-skill) with center. That's why guy like Curry is just one of offensive initiator, while others can start it.

The idea isn't Vanderbilt( who coach Cal called point forward) to handle the ball everytime. It's for Knox and PJ to also handle some of that.

I can see Knox, PJ, Vanderbilt, and Diallo on the floor a lot this year. These are 4 talented players that can shoot from the outside and also drive it to the basket. All 4 are extremely talented players and can do it all. We will probably see many different lineups to start the season with all the talent we have on this team. We have 10 -11 players that could start on any NCAA team this year. This Kentucky team reminds me of the 2014-2015 with all the talent we have on this team. I do believe that this team in 2017-2018 is a better shooting team and the 2014-2015 had a stronger frontcourt. We will see many options from Coach Cal when we start this season.

Because of positionless basketball that Cal likes to play, I think he will play his best 5 players until he is shown that it's not working. But if everyone will remember Knox's Dad said that Cal was going to give him a try at the 2 spot so it shouldn't be a surprise because Cal will keep his word.
