Looking at a Kindle... And all I wanna do is read...
Is the Paperwhite ($99) worth the extra $40 over the original ($59)?

Do you read much in low level lighting? If so, then the paperwhite is certainly worth the money. The back lite on the paperwhite makes it very easy to read in bed and it usually won't disturb the spouse if that is an issue.

Is the free Kindle App on iOS/Android out of the question? Could save yourself some scratch.

I read on a Kindle Fire HDX at night. Of course, the Fire is a lot more that just a reader. You can adjust the background color of the page to black and the print is white. That is definitely the lowest readable light setting for any reader that I have ever had. I also have a Paper White but it bothers my wife even on the lowest light setting. The Paper White is the better device for reading outdoors in bright conditions though and is about $70 less.

You guys that read on a phone must be young bucks:)... No way I'd try and read a book on any phone... Sounds like the paper white for me... I'm not messing with the wife's Minipad......

I had the previous one and now have the Paperwhite. It is worth the $40 (assuming you won't be hurting for $40) you won't be disappointed.

I also read on iPads and my phone occasionally.

The Paperwhite is the best experience for strict reading by far.

It is especially great at night when you don't want to bother your spouse with the backlight.

Ditto. Had the previous one too. Love my Paperwhite. I also have 3 Kindle Fires of different generations. I love those for video/shopping/web browsing etc...but for reading, nothing beats the Paperwhite.

Bought the original for my MIL for Christmas and she really likes it. My wife has a paperwhite that she reads on virtually daily and I can tell a big difference. To me the extra $40 would be worth it.

An actual Kindle is way better than an app just because of trying to read outdoors in the sun. With the e-ink, its just like reading a paper book: the brighter it is outside, the easier it is to see. But with the app it's just like trying to read anything else on a phone/tablet: bright sunlight makes it impossible to see.
