I wrote an article a few seasons ago (!!!!) that reinforced the idea that this season will be a different story than last season, based upon one key player, Alex Poythress. Here’s what I had to say in 2012, let’s see if you agree.
After the tough loss in Baton Rouge to a feisty LSU team, Alex Poythress took it upon himself to call the team to a players only meeting. Coach John Calipari isn’t a fan of players only meetings, but Poythress felt it was necessary to come together as a team and talk a few things out.

During the media interviews Friday, Dakari Johnson was asked about the players only meeting, who did the talking and what went down..
Everybody, we went one by one, a lot of people apologized.
The young Wildcats come together as a team and talked about where they went wrong and took responsibility for their actions, a huge stride for 18 and 19 year olds, thanks to sophomore Alex Poythress.
When John Calipari was asked about the players only meeting, he didn’t seem to thrilled that it happened. When asked during the media interviews Friday about the players only meeting, he gave a brisk answer..
Don’t want to know, don’t care, let’s play.
Another brisk answer was given when asked if their was any significance as to who called the players only meeting..
You’re telling me stuff I don’t know because I don’t care to know, all I want to see is that we’re prepared to play.
Alex Poythress isn’t just taking steps off the court to help strengthen a shaky Wildcat basketball team, he is becoming a force on the court, too. Hustle plays have been lacking with the Wildcats this year, only a few keys players are consistently hustling after loose balls or hustling after rebounds. Poythress is becoming one of those key players to show the consistent hustle.
Poythress may not see as much time on the court or take as many shots as he did in the 2012-2013 season, he is still a vital part of this years team. He is showing leadership on and off the court that the young Wildcats need. Whenever a younger player is shaken, Poythress is there to make a monster play or sub in to keep the Wildcats rolling. Poythress is the backbone the young Wildcats need to be a force as they continue their conference games, heading towards the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. If Alex Poythress can keep being the key to success the Wildcats need, losses like the one in Baton Rouge will be less likely to happen and this team can be a force on the road to the Final Four.
