Kentucky at UNC (Sunday)

Same lineup as yesterday with the exception that Squires will catch while Cottam DHs.

Reks once again leads off the game by getting on base, this time with a walk, buy Mahan hits into a double play and Pompey strikes out to end the UK half.

Lewis left one up and UNC made him pay. Early home run puts Kentucky behind 1-0

Lewis got three ground outs to the right side, buthe that home run hurts. I think that's a run in the first inning of each game for UNC. Could be wrong though.

Hyer gets his first hit of the season, a double, but uk hitters strike out 2 more times. I think that's 25 in three games.

Lewis with another mistake that gives UNC a two run home run to right to go up 3-0 in the second.

Squires and Heady combine for back to back hits with Heady getting an RBI double to make this 3-1 with no outs in the third.

Mahan makes me look silly for criticizing him and hits a 2 run blast to right to tie this up 3-3 with one out.

Lewis in trouble again after a leadoff walk and then a UNC hit and run puts runners on the corners with no outs.

Lewis balked for the second time today and this one gives unc another run.

Lewis walked another hitter and his day is done. Salow coming in to pitch. Strange pitching change IMO.

Kentucky got a pick off at second, then a ground out to second before giving up an RBI double. Now down 5-3.

We need pitching, UNC is good, but we make them look better than they are !

Are you watching the game? I ask because I felt like Mahan could have made a play on the leadoff runner with one out in the third. He went straight to first and that cost us a run. Wondering if you saw it and what your thoughts were.

Two walks and some luck help out UK. Kentucky put on the hit and run with an 0-2 count to McNeill (kind of dumb IMO) and McNeill popped it up to shallow center. The unc shortstop dropped the ball but was able to get Hyer at second. Carson scored after Squires beat out a double play attempt. Heady then botched a bunt attempt to end the threat.

5-4 in the 4th.

Third straight inning where UNC has gotten the leadoff hitter on. The past two innings were on walks. UK has walked 4 and struck out just one.

I feel we've got some poor luck with umpires. Today, Reks fouls one off of his leg but the umpire doesn't see it and they call him out as the ball rolled fair.

I'm just listening. Just can't keep the lead off offf the base paths.

Well I believe everyone now has at least one else hit. Stringing them together hasn't been easy though.

Yeah, that's Mahan for you !

This shift is killing us. UNC is eating up everything in the middle thanks to the shift and we can't take advantage of the big gaps they are leaving. Also, UK hitters seem to be getting a bit more impatient as they are swinging early and prolonging the UNC starter's day.

Really thought Lewis would be better than he was today, I know he is disapointed. We just lack the alpha dog hurler, so far, that you need to get you off to a winning start in each series.

The two home runs are the most worrying. Well, that and the 3 walks in two innings.

I think one of the issues with our pitching will be that we don't really have a guy that has great strikeout ability. That's not a terrible thing but it becomes worse if you can't get strikeouts and are giving up walks. Have to limit the free passes.

Once again unable to take advantage of a leadoff runner. Looks especially bad considering the new pitcher for UNC is struggling to find the plate.

Cleary had a short outing but got a pair of outs. Now we see the big righty Pop.

Well getting swept isn't how you draw it up, but we did have three strong games. Need to bounce back on Wednesday.

Getting swept just leaves a lot of questions. Is UNC**** that good or are we in for a long season? Pitching was not great. Hitting was ok but not timely. We gave up a lot of runs but to a good team.

Not sure if we could change so early but none of our starters were particularly impressive

Lots of things you can point out that need to improve. Plenty of time for those things to happen. To me the most worrisome thing is White's health. If he has a nagging groin injury then that will really affect his season.

Really just cutting down on strikeouts on offense would go a long way. We had 27 strikeouts through 3 games. UNC also did great limiting walks. They gave up just 3 today. Making pitchers work in college baseball is a big deal. It's good to be aggressive, but you also have to get into the opponents bullpen early and if you're striking out then you're not likely getting pitch counts up.

Could we rethink our starting rotation this early ? Salow looked terrific today, threw over 80 pitches and gave up nothing...... just food for thought.
They really need to consider 28 in the rotation. He'd bring experience to an inexperienced rotation for sure.
