It is a challenge to believe that this team can actually go that far in the tourney unless some significant improvements are suddenly witnessed. We are too used to (or spoiled) where Cal comes through at the end of the season. But when you analyze those past teams that made it to the Final Four after so-so SEC performance, well they had great talent that was just not playing well together (turn-overs, bad choices within plays, etc.). Who can forget the South Carolina game with the Harrisons as an example. Continually trying to take it at the basket, forcing shots, but also you could see there was talent and superiority at many positions. The same can be said of the Harrelson/Knight team as you could observe improvement as the season went along.
We are not seeing that growth or demonstrated talent with this team. Other than Ulis and possibly Murray when he is on, what positions do you feel we are superior to regarding other teams? Center is a mess and Poythress can play that role against smaller or less physical teams but he is not a center. Willis, do you feel he is a superior forward to other teams players? Briscoe? He is a poor outside shooter and enough said about free throws. Unless Skal or Lee suddenly change, or Cal uses Humphries and Tai (and they produce!), how will this team be that great?
The one thing that we can cling to as hope and has been repeated, there are no truly great teams this season. So, yes of course, anything can happen and Kentucky could win some games in the big dance. But, expecting it seems to go against all observations to date.
