Julius Randle on Cal

By far and away the most underrated player in, well, possibly UK history. It’s unbelievable how often I see his name passed up as one of Calipari’s best players ever. I see so many place him 5th - 8th on the best UK players list under Calipari. . The guy was fouled relentlessly (more than any player I can remember at all) and still owned the court. Took a team all the way to the title game on his back.

To me he’s the 2nd best player of the Calipari era behind AD. Other than Reed, he’s my favorite player of the Calipari era.

I don’t think it’s any discredit to Randle to rank him 5-8. We’ve had 3 number one overall picks, plus guys like Cousins, MKG, Murray, and Fox.

Malik Monk was national shooting guard of the year, and might have trouble cracking the top 10.

Monk will be remembered for his magical game against UNC.

Yea I just don’t think I’d take guys like that over Randle on a college floor. If Monk was guarded like Randle he wouldn’t have done much. Murray, Fox, I just don’t think those guys can hold serve to a player like Randle in colleg. I don’t see cousins as better either, Wall might have an argument.

Randle couldn’t be stopped while being fouled in a triple team. Took his team to a crooked ref from a title with guys like James Young.

Monk isn’t playing through this.

I also remember the “big 3” of that year and how the media completely quit using the phrase and turned it into the “big 2” and anointed Parker. Ended up leaving Randle out of the national conversation in favor of Wiggins and Parker? Was totally ridiculous.

Parker went on to suck in the NBA, and didn’t lead his team to anything.

UK is a first weekend team without Randle.

I have argued Brandon Knight is right there with him. He was a killer. Just a shame he couldn't adjust to playing in a football stadium/dome in Houston. Never forget that 3 he attempted that was completely left of the rim for such a sniper. I had a perfect angle on it from my seat and knew it was a whiff when it left his hands. Sort of thought we were screwed then.

Right with ya. Randle and Knight are in the same mold there. So little respect it’s almost disrespectful how much. I’ll take Knight over most of Calipari’s guards. Killer.

Possibly the most underrated Cat in my lifetime. That a guy like him can be so under appreciated just speaks to the insane amount of talent we have had here.
Yup he was a total monster. One of my friends isn’t even a UK fan but the 2014 season even thru tough times he was like UK is going to the final four because nobody can stop Randle when it matters.

I would in my lifetime add Larry Steele. So underrated. Look at what he did at UK and in the NBA with Portland including a world championship with Bill Walton

Kentucky fans ask the star players to get us to the championship games. Give the school a shot at bringing back it's championships.
Make no mistake the ncaa and sec tournament championships belong to the state of Kentucky. They just be borrowing the trophies.
Randle did his job.

Long story no one will care about but it's interesting. Sat next to Julius at the city of Palms tournament when he was a senior in high school. He couldn't play he had a bad ankle. I asked him how is his recruiting going he said hit me up on my podcast. Which I did. He told me don't worry about it dude it's Kentucky. That's before anybody else knew. I told you you wouldn't care about this story.

Fox cooked Lonzo Ball on the biggest stage. Monk dropped 47 on UNC. Murray was just a younger version of the guy who won a ring last year. He is wired differently than almost anyone.

I agree that they couldn’t take this kind of physical abuse. They are also perimeter players.

Randle making a run to the Title game was awesome, but let’s not pretend like he didn’t have a supporting cast all of the sudden. The guys who returned in 2015 formed the core of a team that won 38 straight.

Anyway, we’ve been blessed with a lot of great players. I wouldn’t rank Randle 2nd, but for most teams he would clearly be their best player in the last 15 years.

I think it's quite possible that Calipari absolutely dominates the next 5 years in recruiting. Between the UK NIL fund that is forthcoming, and all the NBA guys, we could have a renaissance of what we saw from 2009-2014 in recruiting.

That's why I'm pumping the brakes a bit on my previous resentment of Calipari. I'm willing to see how this current group ends the season, and I also want to see what Calipari does with the Dybantsa class. I think there's a good chance we see that second year of Quaintance in Lexington as well as an incoming class that could include at least four of Dybantsa, Wilson, Acuff, Johnson, and Thomas.

I do care, but how did you know before anyone else if he said it on a podcast?

Put Wayne Turner on the Most Underrated team. Floor general on two National Championship teams.
