Looked like Coach Stoops got all over Josh Allen on Pierce's long TD. I watched the play a couple of times. Sure, Allen misses an arm tackle, but he's squeezing the tackle down as I'd think he should. The problem is Meant (I think it was 96) was absolutely blown up on the play. He got knocked 2 or 3 yards off the ball.

Anybody else see it that way or am I missing something? Haven't seen this discussed elsewhere. Sorry if covered somewhere else.

I saw what you're talking about on a replay of the game. Rewound it and tried to see why Stoops was on his case so bad, but never did figure it out. Don't know if he lined up in the wrong spot or if Stoops was mad he didn't get off the block or what. I was at the game and remember thinking when the play happened, "Well not much you could do there. They ran it to perfection and blocked everyone." And it looked pretty much the same on the replay.

I'm sure Stoops saw the same thing on tape and mentioned it to Allen. The obvious answer isn't always the problem on first glance as you've discovered.

I also went back and watched the replay and thought Meant was pretty terrible the whole game. I'm not sure if it's how they're being taught, lack of effort, lack of conditioning.. the defensive line disn't get much of a push the entire game. It appeared to me that ULL had a much easier time blocking on run plays which doesn't bode well for the future. It's hard for a big guy to collapse down quickly when the running back is running through the gap that they should be blowing up to begin with.

I agree. After watching the replay on DVR and being able to analyze in slo-mo it appears our defensive tackles wet VERY inconsistent the biggest part of the game. Interestingly, they played stronger after ULL tied the game! Complacency is a Killer in football or any sport.

Dtackles played the run fine. There star back average 3.4 yards per 18 carries. I'm not sure what you guys were looking at but meants job on that play was to occupy two blockers and that's what he did Allen has to win that 1 on 1.

Only thing that worries me about tomorrow. Wilds is probably as good as or better than McGuire and I felt we did a good job on him. But its the other guys that scare me like Carson (had a nice explosive run vs. UNC) and the wildcat with such young outside linebackers. Have to make sure to keep the edge and make tackles and wrap up. I think we should honestly load the box and force Mitch to throw and not let them beat us running. I feel good about our secondary.

We are not gonna completely shut teams down defensively but we have some speed and playmakers. If the offense plays 70 to 80 snaps a game that gives the defense 60 to 70 snaps. After 70 snaps against ULL we had given up 3 points and under 100 yards rushing.

You are absolutely on point. I almost posted about this but let it go but yes Meant was knocked back several yards and nearly put on his back.

I think that's the thing most discouraging about the first game. Our D doesn't even look improved. Will I ever see a decent SEC defense at UK in my lifetime?

I know you have said this over and over but I still think until we wore down and the depth wasn't up to task, I really wasn't upset with them.

Watched it again. Lewis occupied the double team. Meant got high and pushed out of his gap. Can't speak to the rest of the game; but, on this play, he hurt us.

Keep in mind the ULL O-line is the most experienced in college football, with like 260 starts (and no missed starts amongst them.) That's pretty impressive.

Now, I agree on that particular play, Meant got blown up. Lewis got double teamed. Henderson was late to the gap (partly because of Meant getting blown up), and Allen couldn't get off the block. So well executed play by ULL.

Like I said, I really wasn't upset with the D, sometimes like you said teams just make the perfect play.

I just re-watched the entire game and noticed this play. Looks like Allen definitely had a shot but from the back angle it looks like Henderson had a play on the ball and Westry as well. Westry seemed timid and waited for Pierce to come to him however, freshman mistakes both ways. Meant was completely removed from the play by the guard or center can't remember which.

Anyone else notice that Middleton got pretty good Penetration into the backfeild several times?? He might be one to keep your eye on!!
Meant looks like a blue collar player and a nice guy,but so far I haven't noticed that he has the explosiveness to be really disruptive!!

For me quickness is most important to play dline, then technique/leverage then size, it takes exceptional quicks to be really effective...

I know its been beat to death and some seem to think its not that bad.but I really thought there oline controlled the line of scrimmage.
Now it could be they are better than most think,or we might not have played our best.(probably a little of both).but stoops even said we were to soft in the middle for his liking..The two freshman that gave up long touchdowns can be fixed which actually didn't bother me near as much due to the fact it was basicly inexperience.. But if your dline is consistently getting no push up front with 2 sr and a so.that gets disturbing for the future games..I think cj will help a lot but they really need more than him and lewis.with time Elam will get there but I looks like it might take till next year.Middleton might be a suprise!
P.s. Wonder how dubose looks?

We aren't watching the same play. The massive hole was completely on Meant. And only one guy blocked him. The tackle blocked Allen and the center was on lewis
