Jay Bilas Mt. Rushmore of college coaches

I put Cal and Izzo in the same boat. They have had great years. Stayed competitive with their teams for many many years. Racked up a ton of wins. But both have not adjusted to new age basketball and both of their best days are behind them. They win just enough to have the media call us crazy to ask for better.

Yep all those All stars and only 1 title................maybe Cal should hire an assistant coach that actually does all the X's and O's and stands on the sideline during the games and Cal sits back and watches.

Maybe we would have won more titles.

Since 2000-2001, Calipari is 656-189 which is a 77.3% winning percentage. You can talk all about why and how he got there, but that's still one hell of a record over 845 games. Winning the title is hard. UK should have probably won at least 2 more with him considering the talent he brought in. He has been to 3 title games in that time frame. Just couldn't close the deal against Kansas(while at Memphis) and UConn.

It doesn't excuse 9-16, or the bad losses, but a coach is their full body of work. Not just the best and worst moments.

Then you'd have to include Pitiner. Won last title in 2013, which, I remind you, was taken away.

Since 2000-2001 Cal has around 50 more wins than Izzo and 21 less than Self. He has somewhere around 175 more wins than Pitino I believe. Pitino wasn't coaching college in 2000-2001. Plus he had the whole scandal thing with his 2013 team and coached with lesser programs because of it so that has messed with his numbers.

I hate UofL and am not a fan of Rick Pitino, the human being. However, taking away title talk is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. They beat everyone in front of them in that tournament. And they didn’t have the best players. It’s not like they recruited some Lebron James. Luke Hancock? Was that his name? Very forgettable. Our fans look like idiots when they say 2013 didn’t count. You are talking about the idiotic NCAA. Rick won that title the same way Lebron won a title in the 2020 bubble. I hate them both but that can’t be denied.

As much as it pains me to say, I saw UL win that title with my own 2 eyes. Considering what UNC got away with, I look at all of that completely differently. Cheating is cheating, but selective enforcement is, imo, actually worse than the act itself. What they did with UNC was condoning it, not punishing it.

And Kansas. And UCLA for years.

I don’t condone U of L’s methods. However, I don’t think it gave them an unfair advantage on the court. If you used dirty hookers to get Russ Smith, Peyton Siva, Luke Hancock & Chane Behannan, etc, you need to pay more for hookers.

Like Rick or hate him, he outcoached everyone in that tournament. Take the banner down but I saw it. It’s like telling me UK wasn’t better than LSU during the probation years. We couldn’t go to the tourney but I saw them smack Dale Brown & Co.

Not laughing at everything you said. Just the part about dirty hookers 🤣

I dont see the comparison. The lakers, including AD, won a title without any home court advantage. They didn't cheat to do so and didn't ask to be stuck in the bubble.

Pitino has 2. 3 actually.
More like Mt Crustwhore

Makes sense for active coaches.

The only other active coaches who’ve won championships are Hurley, Bennett and Drew. Hurley is just getting started, and I would take Cal/Pitino/Izzo’s resumes over Bennett and Drew’s.

This is not me saying Cal is one of the best coaches today, but his overall career resume is very respectable. If he would’ve won a second title it would be a no brainer.

I don’t even think there is a close 5th at this point for active coaches. Who would #5 be?

Not a perfect comparison, by any means. You can put an asterisk by the Lakers 2020 title if you want. You can argue that the season was odd, some players had mentally checked out, the league was shut down for a while, there was no home & away games to endure, the finals were in October. Lots of oddities. People often call it a “Mickey mouse title” because it was at Disney and it’s a way to put Lebron & his legacy down. The bottom line is - he still won. He beat the field in front of him.

We may not like Pitino or the dirty birds, but they beat the field in front of them. As far as cheating goes….. I don’t see how Hookers in dorms helped that team on the court. It’s a breach of ethics for sure. If their starting lineup had been 5 transcendent stars & future NBA players (or even college versions of Zion Williamson), I would say the hookers landed that team. They had guys like Luke Hancock.

Question for all- Hurley goes back to back, does he get put on that list instead of a coach already listed?

Maybe in Pitino's place?

Cal or Izzo are the first to get bumped.

You can't bump someone who has two rings, FFs at 3 different schools, built a team that made it to 3 consecutive title games.

He's dominated about 4 different conferences...including the old historic big east that was a slobber knocker way back in the day.

He may make another run with St. Johns before he hangs it up...if he does, he's GOAT.
