Is There a Former UK Player That Would Make a Great Head Coach Here?

Pelphrey looked like he might be on the road to Lexington but those plans changed.

"Kentucky would be smart to hire John Pelphry or Travis Ford."

- Rick Pitino, definitely not lying.

Kyle Macy coached at Morehead. I don't think he is head coach material.

Pelphrey is a great recruiter, but not ready for prime time. He's still the best prospect among former UK players. I - wish he were a UK assistant.

After reviewing the responses, allow me to just say the answer to the OP's question appears to be a clear and easy one: NO. There is not.

At least not right now. Maybe in the future one will eventually emerge, but certainly not amongst the crop of choices out there today.

Frank Vogel

At Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, Vogel was a starter for the Division III basketball team.[7] In 1994, Vogel transferred to the University of Kentucky. Vogel served as student manager for the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team then coached by Rick Pitino in the 1994–95 season. The following season, Pitino resurrected the junior varsity Kentucky basketball team and Vogel played for them.[7][8] Vogel graduated from Kentucky with a B.S. in biology in 1998.[1][8]

A lot of schools could do much worse than Casey or Vogel. Obviously no one is Cal, but if you can take an NBA team to the playoffs on multiple occasions, you can coach.

Casey and Vogel. Other than that, not right now. In 20 years i bet this conversation is much, much different.

Mash seems like a very intelligent guy, and has done fantastic is his buisness ventures. Always kinda wondered why he never got into coaching. Delk has seemed pretty knowledgeable in front of the camera.

Dwayne Casey

He would never be accepted due to being made a scapegoat for Sutton.

If anyone deserves acceptance due to being made a scapegoat for Sutton, Dwayne Casey does. He seems to be a very good coach with a lot of class. I can't remember him ever bad mouthing UK over that debacle.

I pick Dwayne Casey.

I'm sorry, but calling Vogel a "former UK player" is a laughable stretch. A year on the made up gimmick that was Pitino's "JV team" doesn't count.

The guy never wore the real UK uniform, not even as a walk on.
