Is Briscoe now to this team what MKG was to the 2012 team?

Not a great shooter so they have him cutting and slashing to the basket plus hitting the boards on the offensive end. He's the best lock down defender on the team imo. To me he's playing the same role that MKG did and it's really starting to pay dividends. MKG could take a teams best player completely out of the equation.

From a mentality standpoint, Ulis has as much MKG in him as Briscoe. Ulis started the breakfast club again and is virtually afraid of no one.

All I hope is this team stays a team and gets better than they are. If they can do that, they have a chance. The BBN will be there but it will take a team effort this season. If they can hold together I see a chance for an amazing run but they still have to improve on both ends of the court... jmuo

Briscoe is not on MKGs level, but the competition around the nation is not at the same level it was when MKG played. This is a down year in college bball. Briscoe provides some of the same things that MKG did, to a lesser extent, on a lesser team, but plays weaker competition. So it's not a bad comparison.

Briscoe reminds me of the type of guard who would have played on those early 90s Knicks teams or late 80s Pistons teams. He brings a psychopathic astuteness to his defensive intensity that I love.

I hope he comes back next year, along with Lee and a few others.

MKG shot quite a bit better than Briscoe. 75% from the line and TS% of 57%. MKG was a star.

And he is becoming one in the league. Just needs a full season to make it come around. I feel bad for him because I've never seen someone work harder. The fact that he developed a nice midrange shot in the NBA tells you all you need to know about his constant work ethic.

I will agree that Briscoe is playing a similar role. So did Liggins. MKG was just vastly superior.

Cal's better teams usually have that guy who can constantly defend the perimeter. Ironically, last year's squad really didn't have that guy out on the perimeter.

Besides the fact they both can't shoot and they both played highschool in New Jersey, the similarities pretty much end there

OP I get what your saying.
When you look at successful teams often times they possess role players, guys that take on a specific role and florish in it.
Briscoe has taken on the role of a defensive stopper a slasher and a rebounder and passer. Why? Because those are the things he does well.
Lee has taken on the role of a rebounder, lob dunker and interior defensive player. Why? Because thats what hes good at.
Willis has taken on the role of a three point marksmen, rebounder and occassional highlight reel dunker.

And on it goes....once Cal figured out what each of these guys do well its his job to teach them how to succeed in those roles and just as importantly for the players to accept them and dedicate themselves to be good at them for the team as a whole.

It took a while but all this has happened and is happening and this is why we have won our last 3 straight by an avg of 27 ppg.

as far mentality for our team it's a good comparison imo. op didn't really compare them as players.

Have you guys noticed that Briscoe has been kicking Skal out of the lower box on opponent's free throw attemtps? He's made Skal go back and stand in his (Briscoe's) position behind the free throw shooter several times in each of he last few games.

That Has to be a kick in the nuts to Skal, but it's also good to see Briscoe stepping up and playing to his rebounding strength. Maybe it'll light a fire in Skal and push him to work harder than he already his. This team is lucky the guards (Briscoe and Murray) are such good rebounders; otherwise, they'd really get dominated on the boards.
