Is Bonner a true defensive end or a true outside linebacker?

With more weight he is perfect size for a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme. He doesn't have to be 280 to be effective at the line of scrimmage. We need his athleticism on the end, not a wide body to take up space.

According to the most recent weights and heights I've heard he's actually leaner than Bannerman. I believe Bannerman is 6'5, 225, and Bonner is 6'6, 220. Given that he has three years, that should be taken into account when setting expectations for him right off the bat. No way is he a defensive end. Needs to add weight to maximize his potential. Love his athleticism, length and closing speed. Can find his niche as a pass rusher in special situations this year, but I've stood next to Bannerman and he will need the weight room, too, and he's got more mass to him.

I'd hope that both or either could turn into something similar to LSU's Arden Key. Key starred as a true freshman at 6'6" 230 OLB last year.

LSU always has one or two of those skinny agile DE's it seems.

I think the Mingo kid was only about 230 at DE for them.

You don't gotta be 260 to rush the Passer. The problem I think some of our guys have had with the defense is learning all the nuances and just being able to play free. The olb in Stoops defense are asked to do a ton of things. We have guys that have the ability to rush the Passer key is them learning when to rush and how to rush.

I agree. Not only do you not need to be 260 but sometimes it's harmful to put on too much weight too fast. Typically you can put on bulk really fast with diet and work out programs but most of that won't be good weight. Lean muscle takes time. You usually can't put on more than 1 or 2 pounds of lean muscle per month. So anything more than 12 to 24 pounds of body weight added in a year you are probably getting slower and less explosive. You might increase your bench by doing that but you will lose speed and quickness.

Also there's not a direct correlation between weight and strength. He can still be plenty strong at 230 pounds. I am also a big believer that technique and leverage is about 90% of how good you are on the field not weight. Speed and explosiveness will help you more with technique and leverage than bulk strength will. A 230 pound LB that gets leverage will be far more effective than a 260 LB that doesn't.

Is he a Demarcus Ware/Von Miller type or is he a Big Z type?
LOL! He will never be Demarcus Ware or Von Miller. How silly to compare a new juco transfer to the 2 best defensive players in the Super Bowl. Whether Bonner plays defensive end or outside linebacker depends on a couple of things, including how he develops in the offseason nutrition and strength program and how Coach Eliot decides to reassign Jason Hatcher's snaps.

Is Bonner a true defensive end or a true outside linebacker?

I believe the answer is neither.

I expect him to be utilized as our Jack End/LB and as such he will be a stand up DE on the short side of the field with limited pass coverage responsibilities.

At 6' 6", 230# he is not a "true" (i.e., regular down defender) DE in any defense unless he is very, very good in which case he could be a W/S 4-3 DE. However, he can be a pass rush specialist in either a 4-3 (W/S DE) or a 3-4 (JACK LB).

But as a "true" DE or OLB his best fit at his current size would almost certainly be OLB. JMO.

Peace

We need more true neithers. :sunglasses:

Us neithers got to stick together!!!

I think we waste too many good players by forcing them to play at a position they cant do, i.e. Ware in space, or taking a guy off the field on a perfect down for him, hatcher on 3rd down during his time here. Iine em up and let them play.

Why assume the poster meant he was as good as Demarcus Ware or Von Miller?

I don't mean to call you out, but I see this all the time. One can say player "A" (recruit/current) is similar in style to player "B" (all-star pro athlete) without saying player A is just as good as player B.

Sorry - rant over.
