If you were the coach what would you do to turn this team around?

Offensively I would have better spacing on the court. I'm not sure this is a pick and roll ....or pick and shoot type of team this year. Spread the court with no post players. Leave the lane a clear and free path to the basket. Proper spacing leads to more opportunities for offensive rebounds because of the defense having to help out on the drive to the basket. On defense I think we have to come up with some type of zone. I'm not sure what type but you have to make the other team adjust and not get comfortable on offense. Then again I'm not a coach! I'm just a fan with am opinion.

Spacing doesn't work. We can't shoot. They pack it in. Force ball to briscoe and foul him. He can't hit a free throw.
Defense. I have no clue. Not even sure a zone would work with these guys.

Switching defenses. Use a zone every now and then when the opposition is driving at will. Unfortunately, Cal doesn't use a zone and it's probably too late in the season at this point. M

The next time we get a 21 point lead put Mulder,Matthews,E.J.Floreal Humphries and Wynyard in the game, leave them in till the other team catches up or the game ends.(whichever comes first)If the team catches up put the starters back in,\(hopefully they won't have picked up any fouls on the bench) repeat as many times as necessary.

Watch teams like Virginia who consistently year in year out play defense without fouling.
Watch Iowa St.
Watch Oklahoma

Mind u these aren't great defenses overall this season but they know how to play at least without fouling

We recruit and play future nba guys. How about some isolation? The other team will then back into a zone and then you have Briscoe run the baseline and Skal hang out at the elbow.

On defense, zone it.

I think we've figured it out for the most part offensively (well at least with what we have to work with). It's the defense that has not been up to par. The fact that our interior defense is so bad I'm not sure what you can do outside of playing more zone. The benefit of playing more zone is protecting guys from foul trouble and it gives Humphries and Wynyard an opportunity to play some.

I really believed our defense was going to be our bread and butter this year. We had quickness and length and you would have thought energy and effort since we had a few guys who had been through all this before, Ulis Poy, Lee, Willis, Hawkins. It's just not been there consistently outside of Ulis.

The inability to develop mulder ruined this team's chances. We really only have 3 competent guards. Matthews and hawkins don't have a prayer of scoring. So when we get a lead, cal decides to slow things down to a crawl to limit possessions so as not to wear out our players. This us why we are such a bad 2nd half team. Because milking the shot clock always results in a poorer shot.

We quit running anything to get anyone a shot (other than Murray and Ulis)Briscoe can't shoot.Hell Johnny David can probably shoot, run a play for Skal to shoot a 3 he is more likely to make it than Hawkins or Briscoe

I would have tried giving Humphries and Wynyard some run a while back. It was obvious our interior wasn't going to cut it. If you aren't going to have an offensive post game, why not see if you have a couple of guys who can actually set a screen to free up your guards and grab some rebounds? I'm pleased with what Willis has given us when he got the opportunity. Maybe they could have contributed as well. Too late now though I am afraid. We are what we are.

I would focus on ball pressure, trapping, and forcing the pace in transistion.

sounds radical, but it might've worked tonight.

Not sure you can do anything. Our bigs just don't have it, we're very inconsistent except for Ulis, Skal has been a bust, and we're gassed. The zone may work, but who knows.

1. Play Briscoe for 20 mpg...he needs 5 minutes to give Ullis a blow (Ullis doesn't need to play 40minutes a night). He needs a breather in first half and 2nd half.
2. Mulder/Hawkins needs to see minutes at the SF for Briscoe...there are times when we need a shooter to space out the floor and Briscoe simply kills us as his man tends to not guard him down the stretch of games and causes havoc for driving lanes and any points in paint.
3. Cal will never do it...but we need some stretches of zone to hide our bigs and inabliity to stop dribble penetration. The fouling has been some creative refs...but we foul way too much and allow teams to score a ton from FT stripe. Some creative defense would help hide our issues but a strict man to man allows teams to find our holes and hammer us to death (Murray, Skal, Lee is a foul machine, Willis is slow of foot on perimeter).

I really don't thjink Wynard and Humphries can help us out. Matthews has no scoring confidence...so he's really not helping out in his limited minutes.
